Saint Nicholas the Destroyer ((Happy Holidays))

As per my yearly spiritual tradition, I am planetside for the Amarr holidays, celebrating the holy veneration of Saint Nicholas the Destroyer.

....May his swift judgments (and presents) reign down on you all!

Twas the night before St Nicholas Eve
and all through the station
not a Minmatar was stirring, demanding emancipation

The stockings were hung by the pods with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

The crews were nestled all snug in their vessels,
with visions of Ravens, Apocs and Kestrels

And pappa in his 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a New Eden's nap,

When out on the hull there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my pod to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the hangar and threw up the latch.

The moon on the rise and the asteroids 'a glow,
Gave the lustre of mid-day to the objects below,

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature frigate, and eight tiny drone-deer,

With a menacing old driver, so violent and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.

More rapid than Dramiels his drones they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

"Now, luxuria! now, gula! now, avaritia!
On, ira! on invidia! on, superbia and acedia!

To the top of the drone bay! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,

So up to the bridge-top the drones they flew,
With the frigate full of gifts, and St. Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the hull
The prancing and pawing of those drones so special.

As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,
Down the torpedo bay St. Nicholas came in with a bound.

He was dressed all in armor, his body full of flames,
And his weapons were all tarnished with blood and remains;

A bundle of gifts he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes -- how they simmered! his dimples how scary!
His cheeks were like embers, how completely un-merry!

His droll little mouth was drawn up like a sneer
And the beard of his chin was as dark as my fear!

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;

He was terrifying and fearsome, a right vengeful old elf,
And I shook when I saw him, in spite of myself;

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had everything to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,

And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the torpedo bay he rose;

He sprang to his frigate, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,

"Merry St Nicholas Day to all, and to all a good-night."

A religious holiday eh? Fabulous.

I remember last year, and the year before that, and probably the years before that as well, everyone's favourite pro-Quafe activist, A. Ixiris, was foaming at the mouth with rage and/or despair, at the existence of this sort of thing.

Maybe this year he'll give it a break, hurr.

St Nicholas the Destroyer judges all equally, and harshly.

Rejoice!

The only thing I can find on a "Saint Nicolas" in various archeological sites would appear to reference some kind of ancient surveillance system.

The problem with the information is that much of it comes from what's left behind of a civilization that was not here to stay. A settler for example brings their family history and historical knowledge of their society with them, and specifically around their origins.

But people who are on the move merely to do a job do not do this at all beyond maybe a calendar from home or a personal journal. But such things tend to be in paper products. Paper does not last 23000 years.

One of the reasons why the collapse of the Eve Gate was so catastrophic is because the arrival of people in New Eden was based mainly on the exploitation of it over production. Mining equipment was brought instead of farming equipment. Ships that haul foodstuffs were brought in instead of ships that can sustain an atmosphere and grow food. Ships full of tools built and maintained at Sol system were brought in rather than equipment that can make and repair tools.

So, once the lifeline was cut, it's likely that a lot of the "paper" evidence - the calendars, journals and photo albums, were burned for heat.

So to find an actual calendar with dates marked on them, or a journal or diary that makes direct references to them, is next to impossible. Only the Amarr have a handle on some kind of spiritual events on a rotating time frame but there's no background information as to what "who God was before God was God" as I put it. (Amarrian priests never liked that one).

So, Saint Nicolas? Who or what was that? A saint is a person, this much we know, but I have also seen ancient references to "persons" without evidence of any such individual existing. "Uncle Sam" and "John Galt" for example. There are scant references to these two people, but nothing to prove it. All I can find is that one of them ran a country at one time, and the other - well even the references to him are a question for those who did were asking who John Galt was.

Saint Nicolas? Well the best I can figure is that this was either a system or a person in charge of a system that had something to do with surveillance. This system/person had the ability to know who was good or bad and maintained a list. How this information was obtained was never speculated and to this day no data core or ancient mainframe has ever produced such a list. It sounds kind of frightening

Now these "elves" - well, that's another matter. I've also seen another label for a similar description to the "elf" - the word was "Vulcan". And of this I have no idea beyond a small note in some ancient source code about a need not to wear a red shirt when working on a space ship.

Archeology never stops being fun.
