Question about fitting slots

So, I have a Venture mining vessel. It has 3 high power slots.

A mining laser takes up one high power slot.

A light electron blaster takes up one high power slot.

I fit 2 mining lasers. When I go to fit the gun into the 3rd slot, it says there are no slots available.

If I fit one miner and one gun, the 2nd miner doesn't fit.

What am I missing here? Can an item take up "more than one" slot?

It has 3 high power slots, but only two of them are turret hardpoints.
The last high Power is a utility high, eg: probe launcher,
Mining lasers & blasters need hardpoints so once two mining lasers are installed there is no room for the blaster.

Aha. Ok, I see now that there's a turret icon above the slots with two little circles. Didn't know what that meant. Thanks!

A cloaking device is also a popular option for a Venture that mines in <0.5 security systems. The built-in +2 wstab makes Ventures harder to catch.

Ventures never need to fit a blaster; all mining ships use drones for defense.

On the top of the fitting screen are pictures of a turret and a launcher. Underneath these are circles that indicate the number of turret and lancher hardpoints, which are also shown in the ship info under Fitting.

For hisec mining, I find the following fit adequate, but you may want substitute meta 4 modules which are easier to fit, and/or Miner II mining lasers, and the crystals are optional but recommended in a MDCM II:

[Venture, Advanced]
Mining Laser Upgrade II

Medium Shield Extender II
Adaptive Invulnerability Field II
Survey Scanner II

[empty high slot]
Modulated Deep Core Miner II, Kernite Mining Crystal II
Modulated Deep Core Miner II, Kernite Mining Crystal II

Small Anti-Thermal Screen Reinforcer I
Small Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I

In my opinion, if you're gonna be miing in Lowsec(Sec. level 0.4 or less), you're better off using mining drones, because with a cloak when someone jumps into the system you're gonna be cloaked up right there.

When Bon Scott died and he appeared before St. Peter at the gates of Heaven, St. Peter looked at his record and told him he couldn't get in. Just then, God screams at Peter, "Let him in, Karen Carpenter is driving me nuts. I want to hear some music with balls. We'll haggle over the paperwork later." At least I hope that's what happened.

Probe launcher in spare high, find a wormhole and gas harvest. Warpout if needed when rats spawn but they may have been killed if someone has been through already.

In which case it's REALLY unsafe and you better be spamming d-scan.

It is unsafe but not as bad as you are probably thinking. Besides, dscan is worthless if they already probed the sites hours ago and bookmarked them. Never been ganked in a venture but only gas harvested from time to time. Payed better than rocks though and ventures are cheap.

I'm generally on the ganking end in this scenario. D-scan is useful because it allows you to see an interdictor warping in, which is the biggest threat to a venture. You are quite right that they are cheap though. A few minutes of mining the right types of gas will easily pay for the whole ship.
