Hey!

You are free to monetize your videos through the YouTube partner program and similar programs. We want you to make great videos and spread the love that is EVE and if you make a little incentive through a partner ad program, that's cool.

If you find other ways of monetizing EVE content, we may need to have a separate discussion and maybe draft a contract or something.

Action!

Greetings Guard,

Thanks for the update!

Would this also include DUST 514?

Thanks. Does this include our friends on http://www.twitch.tv/ ? I'm not on Twitch, so I can't say what is the difference $ wise on twitch.
Maybe someone can jump in and say how many views per $1, or how money and partnerships works on Twitch.

with twitch you get money up to two ways. first is advertisements which are probably prate per thousand industry standard or there are subscriber fees you can collect. fundamentally there is no real difference between tube and twitch. twitch the only significant thing is that it is live not prerecorded.

much prefer youtube to twitch because i like to do stuff in post production :P

Well linking to the forum about this doesnt seem enough for youtube..

Here is the response:

Hello,

Your documentation does not appear to give sufficient COMMERCIAL rights for your video to participate in monetization.

If you would like to learn about what YouTube looks for in your documentation, refer to http://support.google.com/youtube/bin/answer.py?answer=2490090. If you would like to learn about how to read a license to understand your rights, refer to http://support.google.com/youtube/bin/answer.py?answer=2490089.

Please note that messages, comments, and postings from social media websites (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, Google+, or Forum etc.) or blogs may not be sufficient to establish your commercial use rights.

Once you have the appropriate documentation, please email it to us as an attachment.

Sincerely,

The YouTube Team

Looks like they need some really fancy type of a webpage stating it instead of a forum post ...

How long did it take before they got back to you? Google is famous for not reading e-mails (due to manpower or greed).

BTW, I literally had to find and call a person that works at Google to get some of my things answered. Like their support is for crap, and most of their departments (like the market and Google Wallet) doesn't have a e-mail, phone number, or anything.
In fact, here is a video Markee Dragon made when he dealt with a similar problem. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xu90Kvzuuns

BTW, Scott Manley talks about this exact problem. It's about 18 min in.

He said he reply with the exact same thing a few times, and they OK it. He even had a lawyer helped him, and they still were saying no.

Well Youtube doesn't like the forum post, they need something more official, I guess something like this Red 5 Studios Video Policy page.

For now I don't monotize my video's. It seems counter productive from Google/YouTube to outlaw certain content when the company that owns the game/footage is perfectly fine with us making video's. I think if the YouTube community didn't make video's and reviews, it would certainly bring down customers. We, as video and content creators bring in a lot of people for gaming companies.

They should switch to a system where companies are responsible for their own crap, instead of having Google/YouTube do their work for them.

Second issue that I have with the system is that it's automated and any communication to them is hardly looked at because they have an automated system in place, so why not trust it right ? So if they decide to use a system like that, then atleast have companies be responsible for their stuff instead of banning content upfront when it's fully endorsed.

Google/YouTube is famous for their information leaking / sharing to and with agencies and crap like that, so it doesn't surprise me that they don't really care about the induvidual person and rather focus on good relationships with companies.

You just introduced a streaming feature with your latest patch, so I would imagine it being perfectly fine... DUH !

Hi everyone, Quick update here.

I finally managed to monetize my first 2 videos. At first I was also bumping into the problem of youtube not accepting the permission. After trying 4 times i gave up but then they asked me to fill in a performance form about their interventions and after explaining it all a fifth time they have accepted monetization for EVE Online videos it seems.

I explained that a game developer won't give out hundreds of individual permissions but like Valve, blizzard and others CCP posted their permission on the forums or on a policy page. So if you come across youtube asking for the permission i would try adding a screenshot of the post, then also showing them other similar cases like:

mount and blade: http://forums.taleworlds.com/index.php?topic=226904.0 because it's also a forum post and valve, blizzard because those are so well known.

I would advise to stay polite and patient at all times, but feel free to be insistent because Guard's post should be and is enough.

I hope this helps, your last resort would be a direct mail to ccp asking the permission which, for full disclosure i have also done as backup, but i have not needed to use it yet.

If you need to write us for permission, we can provide a standardized reply for you to show them. If needed we can also post a news item that you can refer to which is probably clearer and less work for everyone...whatever is needed! Please keep us posted if you guys continue having problems.

All Youtube require is a page we can link to.

Examples are

Ubisofts page http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php/773563-Ubisoft-policy-on-YouTube-videos-Forums

Valves Page http://www.valvesoftware.com/videopolicy.html

Once you have a page like that we can put videos up and link youtube to them which they will accept as permission
This saves you having to give out individual permissions.

Hope this Helps

We will publish a comprehensive policy at a point in time which I would define as "soon". Until then we are here to help with any cases that come up in the meantime.
