Why does a PLEX cost more than one month of subscription?

I'm not trying to beat up on anyone, I'm just curious.

Is there a legitimate reason or am I just going to get a, "Because they want to!" answer?

Versatility of the thing I guess. It can be used for different services and can also be transferred.

Im curious too. If someone wants isk for rl money he would buy much cheaper GTC and sell it on forum market.

plex can be used for several other things and can be sold for isk in the game's market. yo cant do that with the normal sub....

Just like real life.

Ivory soap is $1.50 for a bar. But if you 'subscribe' to it by buying a 10 pack, it ends up costing you only $0.75 per bar. A single thing is always more expensive than multiple things. Marketing 101.

You still pay more for PLEX even if your sub is based off single months.

EDIT : Even 28 PLEX cost more than 28 months of subs with the no string attached 1 month subs.

Because too much ISK is being generated from passive faucets like the giant moon-goo nipple in the sky, research, etc.

A subscription carries the implication of continued purchases, thus you pay less. A GTC/PLEX is a one-off deal, so you pay more.

It's an incentive by CCP to get you subscribed for various reasons. Not the least of which is for their metrics when it comes to portraying how popular this game is based on subscriber numbers.

Because sub players are more loyal to the game so they would rather have you sub than buy plex. Because they're worried about the ammount of unspent plexes that already exist in the game that some people are hoarding.
Because anyone with two neurons to rub together can see that plex trading is a form of company-controlled RMT so it's normal to put an extra tax on it because it's a premium service and it needs to be kept under control.

My guess would be that it discourages people from saturating the market with them. Or something.

Higher financial risk and more annoying accounting.

A subscription is… well… a subscription, so there's a fair chance that you'll keep going next month/quarter/year too, and if you don't, they'll know in advance. This offers a great amount of stability that financial planners (and investors) love. They're also an immediate transaction: you pay, and you immediately get the service you paid for — a simple correlation that makes the life of the accountants much easier and makes the balance sheet look neat (investors love that too). The longer the subscription you buy, the easier and more stable it is to put in the books, so they can be nice afford to reduce the price.

PLEX and GTC do none of that. They're bought at the most inconsistent and odd moments for unpredictable reasons. They're also deferred services: you buy one now, at at some point — no-one knows when — you or someone else will want to cash in the service. There's no stability and you have to keep track of a bunch of outstanding services not yet rendered, which makes everyone's life harder.

If they would of been different, it would of show that it can be related to the different usage of PLEX. It's not different enough tho.
