It's the "Golden Fleet" because it was so ******* massive and "superior" compared to others fleets. It wasn't a mediocre "silver" fleet, it was a "Golden fleet".

EDIT: woops, thought I was in General Discussion for a moment there.

Real story: the Empire was leaked an Ancil Armor Repper and they've been working on armor technologies that would extract greater benefits from it all this time. The color change is a side effect.

The most likely reason is that Fleet Issue ships have an applique coating atop the gold alloy hull plating, giving the ship greater durability and resistance in combat. Since the Amarrians likely have thousands, perhaps millions of ships in the inventory it's likely the vast majority of them are not up to this advanced standard and retain the typical golden hull plating.

Also, there's a good reason to use gold in the Amarrian ship design besides it looking nice. Gold makes for a good heat shield and provides fairly good protection from electromagnetic radiation. Considering their ships are spitting lasers, both of those features would be of use to the crew.

Gold alloys come in different colours and hues, depending on the ratios and types of metals involved in it - the most popular one, white gold being an alloy of gold and either manganese, nickel or palladium.

As such, the Golden Fleet is probably an anachronistic term reffering to the previous line of Navy ships (most still in use) that are using a different kind of an alloy than the next generation ones. (present day Amarr Navy Faction ships).

Regarding black stripes - no idea. Probably some kind of a different alloy / polymer.
