Direct Link Between Manufacturing and Arthritis?

Manufacturing may not be the most gripping aspect of EVE, but EVE could not exist without it. Sure there may be a whole new universe coming soon to a POS-owned Stargate near you - but it is time the backbone of EVE got some attention.

Let's take, for example, the number of clicks required to set up an invention run:
1: Open blueprints/corp blueprints window
2: Right click blueprint, select Invention
3: Left-click Pick Installation
4: Left-click an installation
5/6: Double-left-click an available lab slot
7: Left-click OK
8: Left-click Accept quote
...Repeat clicks 2-8 (seven clicks) for each blueprint

A 10-blueprint run requires ~71 clicks! Copying and Manufacturing also require the player to enter number of runs/copies *each* time. I need to take a bottle of Tylenol before I start my manufacturing runs each day.

That click-path may be relevant to gameplay in "public" labs, where many players are competing for the same slots. However, in a POS, I would argue that the path should allow for batching (selection of multiple same-type blueprints), thus reducing a 70-click path down to 18 (or less, depending upon BP selection method)

Your logic is flawed....click 8 you can do by hitting the enter key...

I hear you man. The whole process is crazy but CPP doesn't care. There isn't a shortage of goods on he market so making it easier would either be a bunch of work for nothing or disrupt the market too much.

I put in a number of change requests that would make the process more bearable but they got basically ignored by the dev that would push them. She said the get 25% of their time to work on UI changes. And well industry isn't a priority. I thought maybe the CSM would help but nope.

Industry needs something similar to that of ship fittings save feature.

You make/record an action for a regular build job and then save the process/info.

Next time you want to run that build and have your items in place, all you have todo is open up the saved builds and click open/play.

Hundreds of clicks saved!!

No

That will just open a can of worm once people realize its easy to make a few billions with a few clicks and next thing you know, the market's saturated with everything. I'd rather just leave the clickfest as it is to prevent more competitors joining in on the fun

You'll only develop arthritis if you fail to take regular rage-induced breaks over the S&I interface.

If CCP made the science and industry UI efficient, every mouth breathing, my time is free industrialist will come to market and crush margins. Resulting in something much worse to complain about.

I do not ascribe mouse clicks to fundamental shifts in EVE economics. CCP has a PhD-wielding economist on staff - Eyjolfur Gudmundsson - and I invite him to weigh in here.

gamasutra.com published a fantastic article in 2001 by Pierre-Alexandre Garneau titled "Fourteen Forms of Fun." In it, Mr. Garneau discusses the broad categories of activities that are fundamentally entertaining. Among these is Application of an Ability, defined as "Using one's physical abilities in a difficult setting".

The author argues:
"The important thing about this form of entertainment is the challenge. If the application of a skill is not difficult then there is no fun in doing it. Because of this, it is important to avoid making the player use skills in trivial situations"

Constantly clicking to spiral your frigate towards a cruiser to avoid damage is an excellent example of application of an ability that is challenging, and rewarding for those who master it.

Constantly clicking to set up a manufacturing queue is an excellent example of how application of an ability in a trivial situation detracts from the immersion, beauty and love of the game.

If the only thing that prevents that from happening is a ****** UI, then the complete lack of barriers to entry for industry is a separate problem that should be addressed. It's not an argument for maintaining a ****** UI indefinitely.
