a thorax probably isn't worth it for ganking. the dps is only slightly better than a catalyst, but costs significantly more. If you want to upgrade from a catalyst, a talos is probably the next ship up, especially with the changes to t2 gunnery training times.

A catalyst can output between 6000 and 14000 dps before being concorded depending on the security status of the system assuming a 700 dps fit. A talos can push 1200 dps according to this blog post , outputting 10K-22K damage before concord arrives.

I can get a few things in a Vexor that I couldn't get in a Catalyst, like a Mackinaw with two relevant defensive modules (eg. Damage Control 2 and Adaptive Invuln Field 2).

Thoraxes don't perform very well, but if your skills are set for it (tech 2 medium blasters, drone interfacing 5, etc) the Vexor puts out a lot of damage.

Confirming that, while skill intensive, the Vexor is the best gank ship in a cruiser size there is that I know of.

Yeah with my skills (not perfect but very high) it's around a thousand DPS. Missing skills are Medium Blaster Spec 5, Gallente Drone Spec 4 and 5, some damage application skills, and my implants are budget ones, but I have the big skills (Drone Interfacing 5, Heavy Drone Operation 5, Gallente Cruiser 5).

That includes overheated tech 2 medium neutron blasters, and just three Ogre 2s - while 2x Ogre 2x Hammerhead 1x Hobgob is more paper DPS, that setup has issues with the damage being applied at different times, which triggers CONCORD slightly earlier than you want.

Sentries +rails at medium range (Javelin M) may be worth investigating too; I don't have t2 sentries trained and while faction ones are an acceptable substitute, it's something else you need to scoop on an alt after the gank. At 4m/unit they are too expensive to consider disposable the way I consider Ogre 2s disposable.

It's not the best but Thorax is a great tool for mayhem. You don't use blasters though. Blink
