Which resistance is the least used?

I mean I see a lot of people use EMP because of its EM and that is meant to happen because most ships have a low EMP resistance?

Is that right?

Which resistance is the highest in general and which ammo type do people buy because of it?

A lot of standard omni-resist T1 fits will have a slight weakness to Thermal damage. Not because it's a resist hole to start with but because once you fill the resist holes thermal is what gets left as the lowest.
So assuming you are talking projectiles look at phased plasma.
However obviously you can't count on this being true, so do research against opponents standard fits and if your gang is large enough, have a scout with a ship scanner to try and find their resist holes before/at the start of a fight so you can change ammo quickly and hit it.

Or just fly Amarr or Gallente and have no choice at all.

Generally I've found thermal to be a good one to use, after people fill in their EM/explosive hole that's generally their lowest even if they fit a thermal rig. Also thermal is an underutilised damage type so few people will think to specifically resist for that, the only things that do heavy thermal are lasers and those aren't generally the scariest thing in pvp, people are more likely to fit heavy kinetic against hybrids or heavy EM/explosve to resist people trying to hit into resist holes.

I mean if your opponent does have a resist hole you should hit into that, but it's impossible to know if he does or not so it's unreliable, thermal is pretty damn reliable, never seen anyone stack thermal resists ever.

There is no correct answer to this.

Just because a ship has a natural weak spot in terms of resists doesn't mean that it's the best ammo to use.
If I fly a shield tanked PvP cruiser I usually have one EM hardener which makes EM my highest resist instead of my lowest.

It also depends on what type of target you want to shoot. If your target is ratting in Gallente space then kin/therm might not be the best choice.

That's the guessing game.

People change their own resistance like the opponents change damage types and the one who makes the right roll wins.

Lasers only do EM damage but then they switch crystals in one second.

By contrast projectiles can change damage at will which a lot of people overestimate since the reload is 10 seconds. That means if you have the enemy in range and switch damage. You start at a DPS x 10 loss in damage that you need to recoup before you can even restore the status quo.

Shield ships start with an EM hole and mostly they plug this but resistance mods to EM is useless against other types of damage so some gamble on just stacking more shield and ignoring the EM hole if the opponent uses Hybrids anyway.

Due to timers Laser crystal swap is actually more usually 3-4 seconds, since the module will continue to claim it's active for several seconds after you stop sometimes, so you can't just queue a crystal change for when it stops and then have it reactivate, you have to wait for the server to be ready for each step.

Most people in this thread make valid arguments. I too have found myself to use Thermal damage a lot because of the same reason.
However, when fitting resist rigs or hardeners, i usually go with Kinetic as my secondary resist since that's what 70% of all Caldari boats will deal, and then a lot of people like to use blasters in pvp which primarily deal kinetic damage as well.

If you go up against a T2 Caldari ship however, it will have the highest Thermal resist, and Amarr T2 has the lowest Thermal resist, and so that's the first thing you will be plugging, bringing it up there amongst it's highest resist.
And so the first point about using Thermal damage type against T2 Cal/Amarr is a bad idea.

But above all, I would say it comes down to experience. What I usually do is look at the character age. and trust in the rule of averages and assume the following:

Character is less than 6 months old = Probably hasn't plugged the resist hole, so use EM damage if shields and Explosive if Armor.
Character is about a year old = Has probably plugged the resist holes, so go with the secondary resist hole which is Thermal for shields and Kinetic for armor.
Character is over a year old = anything goes. and it's a guessing game. Use highest damage ammo.

I generally argue for Thermal and Kinetic (for type to shoot in PvP). The default hole for T1 shield ships is EM, and Explosive for Armor. That's the first filled, however. Generally, tank for both shield and armor is omni/DC -> plate/extender -> hardener (default hole). After that, the second hole is filled if they have space, which is usually Kinetic or Thermal, leaving the other of those two as the remaining hole. The wonderful thing about this is that if means their remaining hole on their primary tank is also likely to be their second-lowest resist on their non-tank buffer.

Omni ships often have either their default hole (EM for shield, Explosive for armor) or the direct opposite (EM for armor, Explosive for shield) as the tanked hole, as 3 hardeners plus a resist rig leave those two as the holes. Still, it's rare to see something tanked like that outside of wormhole PvE or heavy tackle in PvP, hence why I tend to use Thermal and Kinetic.

Also, I prefer Caldari and Gallente ships.
