I'm trying to install linux for the first time on the older desktop. I've made an iso for the 12.04 or 13.10 ubuntu. Same thing happens, i load the cd, i add a boot param or not, it loads the installer and then... Pixel garbage. Every single time.

It completely ignores the vga settings i give it in the boot param and the fb=false gave no apparent results. I don't know why.

I really hate windows at this point and linux not working just adds to the misery and pain. Lots of people run linux just fine and i'm not a computer illiterate, why doesn't it work?

Ok, i think i got the thing started. Here's how to the future people trying to install linux:

-First boot from the CD. If you can't do that i can't help you and you shouldn't use linux.

-At the first small icon thing, before the loading animation, hit any key. You are prompted to select a language. You can hit esc or select one with arrow + enter.

-Here there are multiple things you can do:
-It works, all done
-Hit F6 and hit esc for the boot options. Add "fb=false" to turn off frame buffering after the --.
-Hit F6 and select NOMODE???. I can't remember precisely but it's at this point the installation started working for me.
-Hit F4 for a list of display modes. I havent tried this but that was my next step according to my readings.

Hope this helps. Cheers.

found ubuntu extremely volatile, I use mint instead which works much smoother.
