Remains of Comet Ison? Take a look yourselves, seems real bright!

This is not a joke. I am Dutch living in Holland and it is 17.18 PM here (Dutch-time). I now see in the sky to the south a lightening object (not a plane & there are not yet any stars to see, only the moon at the other side 180 degrees opposite) actually very bright. I never ever saw it there before(!). Could that possibly be the remains of comet Ison. For those of you living in Western-Europe just go outside and take a look yourself, you can't miss it.

For those not knowing about comet Ison's recent history: beginning of this year NASA told us that we could expect a bright (10x times brighter than the moon) light spectacle in the skies re comet Ison passing by. But later on, while passing the Sun it seems comet Ison broke up in parts. Still there is a lot of confusion about comet Ison; it still till present is not realy known how big comet Ison actually was (nucleus).

So, can you also see the object with the naked eye? Seems 10x brighter than the moon. Could it be remains of Ison?

Ha, well, I do not know about the apps and so: I just see it "hanging" in the sky there, made me realy wonder. Suppose in say 2 hours rotating globe I cannot see it anymore. I for sure will look for it tomorrow same time againSmile

There actually was a light-version of the app I use but specifically for tracking ISON, except that they've now apparently given up on the poor ice ball and switched comets. Lol

Comets are electric in nature, the "dirty snowball" hypothesis is one of the worst things to be pooped out of a scientists mouth, that along with the big bang oops. Fred Whipple did a big disservice to science with his coined term that is not correct.

I also read some on reliable (scientific) sites about comets, just out of curiosity. It indeed seems that the real knowledge about the "behaviour" & compositions & inter-actions with other objects of comets is quite "new territory" for scientists.

As to this thread: well, has nothing to do with any speculations or so; just go outside & take a look/verify yourselves at the right times (we don't need any scientists to do that for us & report us Smile). As I write this it is 17.57 (Dutch-time) here, and the object makes an angle now of say 25 degrees with the horizon. It also looks realy bigger than say the polar star (which is not to be seen presently) I expect I cannot see it anymore in say 1 hour from now I suppose. Next it will get to be observed by other continents.

Are you sure it's not Venus? Venus is low and bright in the SSW at the moment.

Comet ISON disintegrated almost exactly 2 weeks ago, at perihelion, and has dissipated into nothingness in the subsequent days.

I deem it 99% likely that you were looking at Venus.

Problem is that Venus wasn't 180° opposite to the moon at the time. Yes, it makes more sense in terms of bright stuff in the sky (especially now), but the position doesn't match. Well, not if the OP knows his degrees at least…

C/2012 S1 ISON is and 6 million mile wide trail of dust and large non-volatile solids. Latest images from NASA STEREO HI1 A show this clearly. Please do not be another one of those doomsday trolls.

NASA Just tried looking for it with Hubble, and didnt find it. The group of guys who recovered it when it was behind the sun opposed to earth in August have some possible recovery images.

See: http://www.brucegary.net/ISON

ISON is BY ALL MEANS... no longer a comet, and only a trail of dust and debris slated to pass 40 million miles above earth orbit on January 14th, 2014.

At worst we could pass through some larger debris from the original path of the tail and get a meteor shower, possibly some large fireballs, but even at this stage with the disintegration characteristics in play the large majority of debris will never even come close to earth.

Comets are super cool, but unfortunately General Discussion is not the proper place for them. Unless they're Federation Navy Comets, of course.

Because in EVE Online, General Discussion doesn't mean General Discussion.

Have to agree with you: far more accurate would have been for me to formulate that phrase as fws: "for those not held in closed penitentiary, just go outside and take a look yourselves".Big smile

But seriously: how often do people nowadays watch the skies? Almost never in these fast-paced times. I am not advocating the Mayans now watching the skies 24/7, however, from time to time just using our given senses instead of relying on the digitally displayed words only, well, can't hurt imo.

Anyway, if it would indeed would prove to be some remains of Ison then we will know very soon through the media. Checked the media here, no mention of it yet.

At that time and hour, and roughly to the South, there was Venus:
