What's the current number of active accounts?

Last time I heard about it (I think it was around FanFest), it was something like 500k. I'd be interested at what rate it has been growing since, because one of the recent dev blogs suggested a significant increase.

+1 for saying active accounts instead of active players.

Citation needed, there are a few sources on the web that cover subscription MMO numbers, CCP gave Massively an interview in Feb of this year stating they had 500,000 paying accounts, MMOdata.net seemed to back this figure up in August of this year, they've probably gained some more since then.

The fact that I am not a gazillionaire Gallente aristocrat with the sexual capacity of a rutting rhino is a constant niggle.

I heard it was nearer 300k, similar to the population of Iceland.

Dumbing down of Eve Online will result in it's destruction...

Assuming every one and their alts who has cried that they were quitting actually has, then it's just the two dozen of us left. And our alts, of course.

I wouldn't really call MMOData “backing up” anything, since they only ever repeat numbers they've gotten… somewhere… and those sources are rarely, if ever, disclosed.

I remember in the highest peak of EVE development and hybris, after Apocrypha, CCP CEO declared as their major goal was to same subscriptions as iceland population (so, breaking the 300k).
But then I don't remember they talked about this again nor claimed the achivement of such numbers.

I think the important word there is seemed, as in CCP seemed to know what they were doing when they revamped Sov, judging by the complaints about it, they didn't.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

I think they sum the chinese servers subscriptions in that Massively article:

"Subscription numbers hit the 450,000 mark following the relaunch of EVE's Chinese server Serenity in December of last year, and they have continued to climb ever since."

Depends on who you ask...

With dual character training, I'm willing to bet that the actual number of accounts has lowered...

Which explains their obvious cries for attention recently...

Actually they were aiming for a population equal to the GDP of Iceland. They surpassed that in 2009.

Not really, considering they don't actually lose money if someone decides to have 2 characters training on one account rather than having 2 accounts.

Now, more than ever, we need a dislike button.

Yes, they do. Not that it makes what Azami said any less dumb.

Login stats can be seen here. http://eve-offline.net/?server=tranquility

From the fact that 40k+ are logged in at peak times... and there are 3 major timezones... plus the Chinese server... (plus dust514)

Logins break 50k+ online during weekends

Probably around 100k unique acct logins daily would be my guess; if not during the week then defiantly on the weekends.

That they have 4-5x this 100k for around 500k active accounts is defiantly possible.

Also activity always spikes near expansion time.

Uh, no, they don't. they still pay a 30 day plex for 30 days of dual character training. If anything they could in fact save money, since they get less load as fewer simultaneous logins are encountered.

Active accountsis the only thing that matter for CCP. Its irrelevant for them if the money come from less rich people or more poor people.
