Because the Internet (and MMOs by extension) offer a safe means to vent negative behavior that is otherwise inhibited in real life interactions. I would much rather people act psychopathic in a video game than in real life.

It's similar to "prison law." The more big, bad, tough, and/or rich you make yourself seem, the less the general rabble want to "mess" with you.
