Why do people try to act so tough and bigshot in this game?

The players of this game eternally crack me up.

People talk like big shot tough guys in a geek computer game... is that not beyond ironic?

People always talking about how much isk they have, how uber at pvp they are with almost no kills on their profile (it's always their main who has the kills... right?), how uber at ganking they are (that's so difficult isn't it?), how fail everyone else is...

examples:
1. i frequent a public channel where this one guy talks on and on every night about how awesome he is for flying super-super-super pimp ships with 3.5 billion dollar fits and how uber of an incursion jockey he is. all night, every night, like this is the measure of a person.

2. i had a cup of coffee in a fail null alliance and while his home station was being camped and everyone was cowering in the station this dork would be in comms and corp channel complaining that "I can't ever find any targets. Everyone is afraid of me in local"... all the while his alliance home constellation is being curbstomped 24x7 by some NPC null sec dorks for weeks on end.

3. Peeps go on and on about how they "finish 10 lowsec level 5's per hour" - hey stupid, that's 1 turnin every 6 minutes - or "I do Enemies Abound final pocket in a dramiel, you're doing it wrong" or just pure nonsense idiocy and act all tough.

What is about Eve - essentially a geek mode game - that makes people try to behave like super tough and/or super smart people?

It's a game. Acting all tough guy seems pretty stupid.

The internet releases people's inner douchbag. Sometimes it will even eclipse their outer d-bag. No big mystery really, it's been common since the earliest days of the Internet. I am sure the DARPA techs used to do the same thing when it was being developed.

Al Gore probably led the way.

People need something to rate themselves against. So then they can use that to feel good about themselves.
How else do you feel good about what you're doing without someone saying thats good? You have to do it yourself.

You should find cooler people to hang out with.

...but you can't hang out with me.

You aren't cool enough.

Signatures should be used responsibly...

I'm pretty poor.

I have a crap corp (go ahead check it out).

I get scared every day when I have to go into LowSec.

I pee a little bit when in w-space.

My penis is freaking enormous.

If anyone ever looks at you and says,_ "Hold my beer, watch this,"_  you're probably going to want to pay attention.

The people you are talking about are not geeks they just the usually meat head that felt like he could beat some geeks.

then when he found out the geeks over and over and over beat his ass because hes to stupid he buys plex and talks ****.
That what they do in RL and to bad hes to stupid to notice it does not work in games.

Sounds to me like the OP is arguing against basic human nature.

I wrote some true EVE stories! And no, they're not of the generic "my 0.0 alliance had lots of 0.0 fleets and took a lot of 0.0 space" sort. Check them out here:

You wanna make something of it?

Just kidding.

Having watched people in RL abuse their power and actually grief people out of land, freedom, and their futures, my theory is that in game it's either people extending themselves, being RL asshats, or it's the victims of these asshats who are powerless to do anything about what's being done to them IRL and hence come here where they can.

To be fair, there are females playing the game also. They're compensating for their overly large vaginas?

Because having an ego is all that most people in this game strive for.

"Nay," responded Kurama Bingyi, "to crush your enemies, to see them fall at your feet - to take their horses and goods and hear the lamentation of their women. That is best."

If they spent more time on their feet and less on their backs, they wouldn't have that problem.
