Find what you want to do and find a corp that does it;

If you want to experience the great 'space opera' ( and everyone should at least once, imo ) look for a corp in a SOV 0.0 alliance. I assure you that you can find a home out there within the first few weeks ( though I don't necessariy recommend it ).

Especially in 0.0, you will find alot of your direction for ship skills with no real loss over time if you get bored and need to leave to recharge.

To give you and idea:

One of my memorable fights involved zipping around in a friggin merlin amongst the PL titans during a Venal campaign. In retrospect, I wasn't doing a dang thing in the big picture, but man was it a blast.

Don't fall for the 'must have this many SP to ride this ride' hype.

Same 'find a corp' applies to Low / Wormholes / or even Highsec I suppose. In the end, unless your plugging in a year long supercarrier skill plan, you'll find you can't go too wrong by training into one race or another. The support skills almost all overlap anyways and you'll be busy with those for a while to come no matter what hull you end up in.

EDIT:
Summary: You honestly can't go too wrong just picking a ship you like the look of and adjusting later when your character is older and your direction is more self-evident.

Watch this video a few times, it may help you to decide what is best for you and the style you want to play.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkVpDqKLSDY

In a nutshell, Minmatar are great at pve and pvp. Pick a tank type and stick with it till you get good at it, then pick up the other type of tank, if you want, and get them skills up. It really doesn't take too long to train for armor and shields. Some of these ships can use armor and or shields very well.

For Amarr, you are really stuck with armor tanking, em and thermal dmg, and a less agile and speedy class. Though like you mentioned, Amarr are very good at med to large size fleets for pvp. That is not to say that Minmatar isn't though....

TBH, Id vote ya for Minmatar till you get around 10-15 mil sp. stick with it, find a ship you want to use, and train it up well. lv 5 your support skills, use both shields and armor, and when you are into the game a year from now, then get into the other races... to explore the unbalanced specifics provided from them.

That is my biased opinion, Minmatar FTW.

Some other points:

- from style point of view i like galente the most (mega, hyperion, brutix, frigs). Problem is that i read everywhere, that gallente is really bad at everything and even with hybrid buff they will still suck. So i dont want to invest month of time to finally realise that my ships are just plain bad :/

Dont believe everything you read.

Gallente boats are perfectly viable as PVE ships, especially if you work on your drone skills. In fact, drones are VERY handy in level 4 missions against ships that Jam or sensor damp you. And sentry drones make it even better.

Id say if your current goal is to make money with mission running, and going Caldari with Shield/Missile skills is out of the question, then go with Gallente. You can build up your armor, drone and gunnery skills, which can translate pretty easily towards flying Amarr ships as well if you decide to go that route for PVP later, or if you want to fly Amarr ships for missions in their space.

Amarr:

Don't underestimate the sheer DPS lasers can put out. While you will encounter some factions with higher EM/Therm resists, these won't be any worse than the resists you encounter in PvP - you'll still eat through them. Furthermore, there are some Amarr hulls (Harbinger, Curse, Gank Omen) that do actually work decently with shield-gank style fits.

That said, lasers have some unique advantages as well:
- Infinite ammo: Even when using T2 and Faction laser crystals, which will break after a few thousand shots, it's actually quite likely your ship will outlast the crystals in your guns (this may not be true if you re-use preused crystals you loot from player wrecks or use Faction/T2 crystals in PvE.. but I don't get people who do that anyhow).
- Instant range control: Unlike all other weapons, lasers swap their ammo instantly, allowing you to continuously control your range and always fight within your optimal.

Both.

Seriously, there are several Amarr hulls that are better off fit with autocannons than lasers, both races primarily use gunnery skills and the extremely deadly blood raider faction ships use both Amarr and Minmatar ship skills.

Train for both and when you're all grown up you can fly a Bhaalgorn and murder neutral logistics fleets in highsec or capital ships in low/nullsec.

To be honest, pick the ships you like now, and don't plan too far ahead, as by the time you perfact a ship it will change at least a couple times.

When I've started I've picked minnie ships, mostly because I liked the backstory behind them.
Back then minmatar BS'es were total crap, cruisers and smaller owned thanks to them being fast enough during the nano age.

Once I got skills for hacs and recons, CCP decided to nerf the nano setups and all of minmatar ships became pretty crap.

Another couple months later when I was seriously considering cross training amarr for the fleet ships, CCP buffed projectile weapons and now they own again.

Right now it looks like the focus is on hybrids, so Gallente and Caldari may become the next FOTM / FOTY.

Considering CCP is promising to stick to more frequent balance changes picking a ship line based on what you'll be doing in a year or two is kind of pointless.

So once again - pick the ship you like the looks of or feel of, worry about incursion ships later :)

P.S.
Don't pick Caldari - they will forever be carebear crap ;)

I echo Zi'Boo comments with one exception. Even Caldari have some great ships. The Drake is absolutely awesome in both PVP and PVE and a decent T1 fit can be trained into in about 3 weeks. The Manticore is arguably the best stealth bomber, the Falcon is the most feared ship on the battlefield and the Basilisk one of the best logistics particularly for incursions.

If a missioning source of income in a consideration, training the Caldari line upto BS will serve you well. You can then fall back on the Drake for PvP and start cross training other ships. It is common for players to max out all or most racial Frigates and Cruisers.

Choose a pirate faction!

I like gurista but any cross faction group can be fun.
