Rule 1: You do not talk about PvPing.

Rule 2: You do NOT talk about PvPing.

Rule 3: Never fly what you cannot afford to lose.

Rule 4: Propulsion mods (Microwarpdrives and Afterburners) and Warp Disruptors/Scramblers are mandatory on all PvP ships... unless someone specifies otherwise.

Rule 5: Frigates are fast, Battleships are not. Battleships are tanky, Frigates are not. Fit according to the strenghs of a ship.

Rule 6: Don't try to fit "everything" at the same time. If you do you won't be able to do anything 100% and will die to somone else who can.

Rule 7: Tank, Gank, Speed, Utility... choose 2 and a half.

Rule 8: Buy ships and mods in bulk, move them close to your hunting grounds, and fit them up in advance.

Rule 9: There are no rules enforcing the traditional concept of "fairness" in EVE. Your opponent is allowed to throw anything at you as long as they pay the fees and/or penalties (if any) required. However, you can ALSO do the same thing.

Rule 10: Get out there and just do it.

Interpreting question as, "How do I play Eve?"

In all seriousness. You asked a very, very broad question.

1. Read that first comment on this thread, it's epic.

2. Find a good corp.

3. Figure out what you want to fly based on your playstyle

4. Play long enough to figure out your play style.

5. Send me 1bn isk and I'll teach you everything I never learned.

Fly some type of ship. Fit it with some modules. Train skills to go with it.

Seriously, EVE is a PvP focused game. There is no "arena gear". Pretty much all the ships are useful in PvP in some way or another. The fitting you want will depend on the ship you fly and the role you want to play. Skills you need will be based on what ship you fly and what modules you fit to it.

Read up on the different ships and the roles they play. Find out something that interests you. Start small, expect to lose a lot early on. Every ship in EVE, no matter how much time, effort or ISK you put into it, is expendable and replaceable. Find a friendly corporation that will show you the ropes. EVE is a MMO with huge stress on the M and M. Don't expect to get far alone.

You're asking the EVE equivalent of "How do I play chess? Which pieces should I use?"

I see you've joined RvB. That's a good start. Ask in corp chat about their rookie help channel. There are some people there that would be glad to help you with ships and fits. Plenty of RvB folks will take you out for some 1-on-1 fights to get you started. Once you've picked out a ship or a few ships that interest you, people here would also be glad to help you with fits and tactics. They just want to see that you've done a little research on your own as well.

Advice that is working well for me so far:

Start living in lowsec. Go forth and get killed. Again and again.

For a game with a reputation for being full of gankers and ninjas, I am finding the folks I run in to online to be amazingly helpful. Sure, they *kill* you first, but that was going to happen anyway :)

Learning to love the fact that lowsec is full of gankers and ninjas is step 0. Aspiring to become one is the next step.

Seriously, I am getting great advice from the folks that I fight. One of them gave me a very detailed fit critique last night and sent a bunch of sample fits my way. He and his partner took at least 10 minutes post-fight to help me out. It was amazing.

I plan to join RvB at some point, so I think you made a good choice. I am doing Faction War now which is super fun once you figure out how to easily get fights. And the Amamake area is proving a great place to get beaten up by super experienced folks, which is exactly what I want right now.

I'm a long way from being good but this is working well for me so far.

Um also yes generic question but remember the number one rule of eve-

If it exists there is pron of it.

Wait no - it's : don't fly what you can't afford to lose.

RvB should get you going just fine- frigs and smaller stuff great way to learn. Sounds like you already got over the fear of exploding, that can take folks a bit sometimes.

Good luck!

You might have quoted the wrong rule of Eve, but I for one know I have run into applications of rule 42 34 on Eve (especially on its ships). It's a little bit disturbing.

Would it be too much to ask for examples? Twisted

edit: I think you are referring to Rule #34. Or is there a Rule #42?

You're right, I was talking about Rule 42 34 (dammit, why do I keep typing the wrong thing). And no, I cannot provide examples, both because it would simply be unprofessional, and because it would excessively derail things. If you'd like you could create spaceship a rule 34 thread elsewhere. Just keep it safe for work (NSFW content is against the rules).

Both rules apply actually... Good catch
