Eve Launcher failed on patch 1.0.5, when should I give up?

I've had a bumpy ride with Eve Launcher since it first came out months ago, I've spent hours reading up on how to get it to work when it occasionally decides to be naughty. But thanks to posts from users, I managed to get Eve launcher/client to work.

But everyday since patch 1.0.5, launcher would get to 43.5% on 2/4 of the patch update and fail. It gives me a long exception error log. After browsing the forums, trying the repair tool (fail), nothing worked. I've sent in a petition and attached the exception logs a few days ago. The only response I've received asked me to reboot the computer and send in a log. Shocked

So it's been several days now. Question to the long time Eve players, how long should I wait for CCP or is this a lost cause? I really don't want to leave Eve because when the launcher/lient works, it's really a nice game. It's already been several days... you think CCP will respond and help?

Also could I get a subscription refund? Eve support pages don't say anything about refunds for a product that doesn't work. I just renewed my annual Eve subscription a few weeks ago. Cry

The game, and the launcher, work just fine.

It sounds like you have issues at your end, have you simply tried to uninstall (and I always recommend manually making sure all files/folders are completely gone) and reinstalling? Of course it doesn't hurt to make sure you video drives (and probably now your Direct X version) is up to date as well.

Every patch, CCP has a quota of people they want to cancel their subscriptions.

I'm not exactly sure how this works, but it seems they break stuff on a few people's end to force them to quit.

Really not much you can do other than cancel your subscription.

Sorry.

Try turning your AntiVirus off prior to running the launcher. Worked for me and several others in this thread.

I always wondered, why people were having problems. For three years, updating the client worked flawlessly for me.

Then suddenly, back in september this year, the launcher would fail for no apparent reason. Next day it was even considered a no longer supported 16 bit application by the os. The update via exefile.exe also failed with an error.

Repair tool ran into the same issue the launcher had.

The petition I filed, was answered within a couple of hours. After discussing the issue with a gm, the only solution was a fresh install. So I downloaded and installed the new client.

Launcher and repair tool were still not running, but using exefile.exe I was able to keep the game up to date again.

I kept on trying to get the launcher back to work daily for about another two weeks, when one fine day there suddenly came an update to the launcher, after downloading a patch via exefile.exe. Et voila, laucher back to work. Same for the repair tool.

There were no news from CCP regarding any launcher issues or their fixes. No communication at all. I'm not sure why CCP is doing this here, seeing how good the communication between the devs and the players is in EVE, compared to other games I played in the past.

CCP is failing completely here for some weird reason. Failing at a crucial part of their product, which basically is the door to EVE.

Remove standings and insurance.

I'm still trying but no luck. Nothing back from CCP for the last couple of days.

I think I'll try the brute force method, clean harddisk and reinstall. Due to Internet access issues, I need to buy the install DVDs with the 5-6 gigabyte files from Eve... I hope. Been trying to contact them but not sure who.

If anyone from CCP is reading this, I'll be happy to pay for shipping and DVD media to get the newest install file version since the problem started with version 1.0.5. Would be nice to skip that patch.

Apparently my reputation is big enough to incite people to post bitterness.

People recognize me and get all uppity.

*sips on some Chianti*

My work here is almost done. Stuff like this strokes my sensitive nipples.

But seriously, CCP breaks stuff for a select few and no one knows why it does it or how to fix it most of the time. I knew someone on voice comms who was raging over the patcher. I'm not sure if they resolved their problem or quit.

You can uninstall and reinstall and hope for the best, but the person in question tried that already.

Fly out to CCP and take hostages until they fixed it?

I've tried with patch 1.0.7 and like the previous two patches, Eve Launcher would get about half-way in step 2/4 and then break. It spits out a long exception error log. Funny thing is that previous patches for Rubicon worked just fine, but patch 1.0.5 broke it for me.

Thanks Daisai for the tip. I checked DirectX and I have version 11.1. I think that's what you mean by dx version? (I'm no computer expert).

Captain Tardbar, yes I understand that cleaning the harddrive and do a fresh Eve install might not help if the Eve Patcher code has some kind of conflict. But since I can't play Eve anyway, there is nothing lost in trying. However, I first have to find someone in CCP who is wiling to sell me a DVD with the 5-6 gigabyte install files. Other than one brief msg several days ago, I feel like I'm Mr. Invisible.

Hmm I just thought this - there are many players who been dealing with CCP for years. To those people, do you know of someone in CCP who could burn the publicly released Eve install files onto DVDs and send them to me? I'll pay for shipping/handling and DVD cost.

Due to my situation, I'm not allowed to download 5-6 gigabytes.

Thanks.

My patch 1.0.5 failure took place on Dec. 3rd. Seven days later, Senior GM Arcade examined my Launcher exception logs.

For people who may encounter this problem, the fix was found and its solution may help you. GM Arcade suggested three possible sources that may have caused the Eve Launcher to fail. Two were trivial solutions that even a computer noob like me could figure out before I submitted the petition (restart computer to close Eve processes or files running in the background, and start Launcher directly from the EVE Online client folder).

Senior GM Arcade pointed out the error message was " IOError: [Errno 13] Permission denied. " He wrote that this message appears when Launcher does not have enough rights to change files. With my standalone computer, my user account clearly had administrator rights given the case I've been playing Eve for a long time.

I then obtained technical computer help to check the properties of the hard drive because I already had full adminstrative rights as a user.

From what I understood from the technician, Windows 7 interprets the permissions on a NTFS drive very strictly. He checked all the NTFS HDD security settings. Apparently Eve Launcher required appropriate administrator access/ownership and correct permission settings for ALL four of the following: AuthenticatedUsers, SYSTEM, Administrator , and Users (apparently the default for a newly formatted drive in windows). When permissions for all four were set back to the default, Eve Launcher update processes worked! Yah!

My only complaint, it took over seven days for CCP to respond with a tip. The tip was usesful and I was fortunate to have technical help, but I think it would been good customer service if CCP checked the logs within a few days after I submitted the petition and gave me a more technical briefing document or link for non-technicians. I'm sure I'm not the only one out of thousands over many years to have had this problem.

Now, my next struggle with CCP is to recover about a week's worth of SPs lost while the Eve Launcher patcher was offline. I'm still waiting for a response to that petition, 8 days later when I asked them to insert a long level 5 skill. Nothing yet. :(

Just to make sure, did you actually uninstall the game and downloaded a new FULL version, rather than trying to patch old clients?

The tech did nothing else but set the permissions for ALL four of the following: AuthenticatedUsers, SYSTEM, Administrator , and Users - back to the default ( the same for a newly formatted drive in windows).

I didn't uninstall Eve Online because CCP doesn't sell Eve Online Install DVDs.

uninstall EVE
download launcher
install game from scratch

You've wasted all those days without doing that and it would have solved your problems right away.

Yeah, I know. The brute force way for noobs, get any problem, download 5 - 6 gigabytes (which I could not) and reinstall. Would that have fixed the HDD permissions for all four types sufficiently for the Eve Launcher to work in the next patch update? Probably not.

Well this noob is playing EVE, how about you? It's not about permissions, it's about your client being messed up due to previous updates and whatnot, sometimes **** happens. But hey, keep at it!

Really? I have problems with an exception error on the launcher that CCP has stated that is their problem and not on my end. CCP has also stated that the issue that this person is experiencing is CCPs fault for the incorrect pulling of the libraries on CCPs end not the players. This does not happen to all the players, just some according to CCP and they are fixing it.

So....Next time before you say it is on the players end try doing a little research.....
