Salvage Drone question - manual reassignment

I just stumbled on this one. If I have a drone working on a target, and then assign it to another target just as it completes salvaging the first one, does it lose the loot of the first wreck as it goes to the newly assigned wreck?

I would advise waiting until the drone shows "idle" before assigning it to a new target.

If it does grab some salvage, it still needs to fly back to your ship to dump it in the cargo hold. It won't carry the salvage from one wreck and salvage another.

I prefer to order them to salvage before locking anything that way they work every wreck in range without needing my attention.

...takes 5 times as long as assigning manually.

Park your ship by the mobile tractor unit, and it's faster to let the salvage drones alone.

Most of the time lost is drone travel. Eliminate drone travel and they work faster than the tractor. So let the tractor stop working when you start killing stuff, and when you drop the salvage drones, they should catch up about the time your tractor brings in the last wreck.

My choice of pronouns is based on your avatar. Even if I know what is behind the avatar.

I don't recall the actual name of it but I added the module that increases drone velocity, with 5 tractor beams, 5 drones, and 3 salvagers on my Noctis we all finish up salvaging and looting about the same time unless there are wrecks scattered over 60kn away.

I haven't used the mobile tractor unit yet.

edited to add: my skills are not maxxed for this either atm, mostly at III

With the space available on a Noctis, I'd add one, just to see if it makes the whole process even faster for you. They're only 100m3

Edit: It also has a reach of 120km with a 1000m/s pull, so that's a bonus time saver.

Edit edit: But you can't direct where it's going to pull from, and it picks the closest items first, so that might be a caveat.

I don't think the mobile tractor will be worth it on a Noctis, at least not if you have a decent level of the ORE Industrial skill.

With ORE at 4 and T2 tractor beams, you get 81.6km range and 2040 m/s pull, so you'll pull in everything within 81km before the mobile tractor does. The mobile tractor could help for wrecks even further away, but he will start with those closest to you, so he won't start pulling those until you finished pulling in all the close ones. And at only 1 km/s, it takes over a minute to pull in one of those far away wrecks - it's faster to move towards the wrecks with a MWD (or a real warp if >150km).

The mobile depot is far more interesting, as it allows you to switch out tractor beams and salvagers on the fly, depending on what you need more.
