Do I have to kill the NPC rats to gain sec status?

I have negative sec status and want to get it up.

One of the cheapest ways is to kill npc rats in null, or do missions which take longer time.
My question is, do I have to kill the rats?

I have an alt that has nice missions ships, and can blitz missions fast.
Can I make a fleet with him and stay cloaked on the grid?
Will I get sec status, if not. Do I have to kill it or shoot at it?

Example, alt kills everything except most valuable rat.
Can I then fire one shot at the BS, and then alt kills it. Will I get the sec status increase?

Easiest way to get sec status up is to hand in tags at the CONCORD office in low sec. If you have another character then you can buy them and bring them out. Sir Livingston did a cool video about this a few months ago.

Explorer's Log: Visiting Low-Sec CONCORD Security Office to "fix" my sec status

Could take ages missioning / kill rats to get status up. So much easier (although costs a bit I guess) handing tags in.

I could be wrong, but don't you only get a sec jump from one kill per system every 15 mins?
people tend to find a circle of systems they can travel through killing one rat per system.

Maybe someone can confirm or correct me.

from what i understand its every 5 minutes now and system hopping does not reset it.
straight 5 mins. sucks because i have to re-farm sec often and refuse to buy tags.,

Confirming this.

Now it is the most valuable (in terms of bounty) npc you kill every 5 mins that gives you sec increases. doesn't matter if it's in the same system or not either.

Thanks guys.

I can now tick off 'Learn Something' from today's to-do list.

looks like all that's left is 'Survive at work until 5pm' and 'Gin martini - 3 olives'

If your SEC is low enough to be aggressed by the faction police, you cant cloak. It says something like "Police scanners are preventing you from cloaking" or something like that. You would have to mission out in low/null for that to work.

Thx for answers, seems ratting is the best way, and kill Bs every 5 mins.

Ramona, I know, there are pills for that :)

Seems you ignored some of the people here, as the best and easiest way to raise your sec status is to simply buy it back. No ratting and gaining a 0.1xx% tick every five minutes. I guarantee you it will take far less time to just grind the ISK from missioning or whatever reasonably (more) efficient income stream you have, than it would take for you to gain the sec from ratting.

Of course if you want to waste your time and bore yourself to tears please, by all means do so.

Edit: Also if you insist on ratting you could combine both ratting and buying back your sec by going to low and hunting the clone soldier rats that drop the tags you would otherwise buy to save yourself some money (not time) and gain a little sec in the process. The ones in .2 and .1 even give a greater boost then any of the standard BS rats.

Most efficient options, IMO, are clone soldier tags if ISK is no issue, and level 4 blitzed missions if ISK is an issue. With L4s you are almost always killing one battleship in every 5 minute 'tick' which isn't the case with belt ratting, even in 'bad truesec' null.

If you are banned from highsec and have no capacity to escalate fights in lowsec if you get dropped, running L3s may be a better option.
