Client freezes and symbolic links

If you multibox and use symbolic links to set up your multiple EVE instances and your EVE client freezes frequently, especially on undocking or jumping I would like to hear from you.

There may be a bug in Windows, or possibly in Python that has to do with files in folders accessed via symlinks, but I haven't been able to work out if this is affecting the client or not. So, if the very specific condition described above applies to you, I'd like to hear from you and learn more about how you set up the symbolic links.

Either post here, or send me an EVE mail.

Thanks!

Yes, about once a week.
Its the Mac client and I use the Mac clone maker to set up all the links for me. In general I only run the clones. I got one for each of my accounts. I only run the main instal for then you push out a patch.

Edit: A bit about the freeze. The screen stops updating and the client will not accept any user input, including the esc key. But the ship remains in space doing whatever it was doing last. For example if it was mining it continues to do so until the roid runs out or the hold fills or you kill the client. The only way to deal with the situation is to force quit the client. If the ship is in space than at that time it will do its e-warp.

I run 3 clients simultaneously through symlinks on Windows 7 64-bit and they all randomly freeze frequently (usually at least once a day). It's never simultaneous as one crashes and the other ones keep going fine.

The Eve install folder is located on a normal HDD and the 3 symlinks point to it (system is not on that drive).

Confirmed that's what happens to me too.

It seems in my case it has little to do with undocking or jumping as it usually happens while missioning.

Yesterday I got myself a SSD for games and I'm putting Eve on it tonight. I'll update if it changes anything to the crash rate.

Darwi Hodrade's and my experiences are virtually the same. This is what we on the Mac forum have been calling the "Mac freeze bug". Now it seems to be just "The Freeze Bug". Welcome to my world. CCP Snorlax, you may want to review the 29 page, two year old thread about this bug over on the Mac forum. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=26864&find=unread

I too will be running 3 clients and have just one freeze. It can happen any time, but seems to be most often on grid loads. Also we Mac users have found that anything else using the internet connection on your computer tends to increase the chances of a freeze. This is especially true of torrents. But web browsing can do it. PYFA fetching API data can do it.

Also: I am using a SSD, and I still get freezes.

Well, after more investigation the symbolic link issue is probably a red herring.

However, I'd like to ask for your help and try out an experimental feature that may give us more info on freezes in general.

In your settings folder you should have a file called prefs.ini - it's a simple text file. Open it up in a text editor and add the line

frameTimeTimeout=30000

This sets a timeout value, in milliseconds, so that whenever the client freezes for more than this value a crash is induced. Before crashing, a file called pythonstatus.txt is written to the cache folder.

Please run with LogServer (I know, not on the Mac) and this setting enabled, then file a bug report, my name in the title, attaching the log as well as the pythonstatus.txt file. This might give me more info to work with, especially when I can correlate your description of what is going on with the dump file and the Python status.

I'm also working on improving our tools to diagnose freezes and crashes - hopefully that will also translate to a better Mac experience, even though I'm working on Windows.

Is it worth it for Mac users to do this for you? You would still get the pythonstatus file.

It depends - I need at least to correlate the .dmp file to the pythonstatus file. The log file would tell me that, in addition to other info. You would find the .dmp file under C:/Users/username/AppData/Local/CCP/EVE on Windows - not sure where it goes on the Mac. If you can attach the dmp file along with the pythonstatus file, that would certainly help.

Well, under

p_drive/Local Settings/Application Data/CCP/EVE

there are files with names like

ba626026-34bc-e211-98fe-a7f1d92a82c8.dmp

Is that what you need?

I have Windows 8 and it does the same thing, I have both clients running and one will freeze up and says "not responding" or something similar. Usually I don't multibox but every now and then it will cause one client to freeze up and the other goes along just fine. I have an HP Pavillion G7 gaming laptop along with a 23in Samsung monitor running full screen in window mode.

Not sure about the symbolic links....

I get the same Issues on a Win 7 and a win 8.1 Machine. Not sure what causes it. I have even Ran it in a Clean Fresh installed environment and get the issue. So I know it wasnt any other programs I had on my machine. One client will drop down to 132Mb of Ram used and the other will jack up to 1.2GB of Ram used. The Second client will run without Issue but the Primary Client will get the Freezing Issues. I learned to have my Indy alt signed on Primarily and my Combat Alt Secondary and I just deal with the Indy Alt having Issues. So it is something in the client when Dual Boxing.

I've been having this same (new) problem the past few days while playing 2 accounts (windowed) on a DELL XPS dual core win7 machine with 12GB ram.
Main account locks up every so often, from 3-4 hours to 5 mins. Often while locking rats just after warping into a pocket.
Second / boost account not affected.

Just crashed in the middle of dread pirate scarlet. My ship got out OK, but my fleet buddy was left sweating it for a while :)

Good news is that I have logs and crash dumps, and will file those in a bug report shortly.

Oddly enough, I have crashes that happen with similar problems, with 3 notable exceptions:

1) I do not multibox
2) I do not use symbolic links
3) On trying to Alt+Tab out, the game will shut down with the exception of the EVE cursor in it's last used state. It does not allow me to click on desktop icons, and I always end up having to Alt+Tab+Delete my way to a forced restart.

This has happened 3-5 times a day (at least on days when I logged in for more than a few minutes) since the Rubicon patch.

Win7 on I-made-it-myself.

So long, and thanks for all the isk.

I often run two accounts from one launcher. Very rarely get disconnected, but both accounts get disconnected in quick succession.

The past week I have :-

#one account freezes for what seems like forever then disconnects
#second account is totally unaffected even shows me1 just went offline
#at worst it is only enough time to log back on before I'm logged off again (me2 still unaffected)
#happens about 70% at gates but also mid pve mission even docked up
#been happening for about 6/7 day's now
#Windows 7, gtx660, plenty of ram, i5 3570k.

Where can I get more Info on the logger? I have no idea how to use it.

I run a corp of multiboxers (Note: 10-20 clients running per person) and ALL I've heard after the patch is their clients freezing.

I'm sending this forum post to them now.

After googling symbolic links I remembered a couple of days ago when I booted up my computer, the shortcut to the EVE launcher and the shortcut pinned to my taskbar showed as default icons.

I tried to change the icon back to the eve.exe icon but it kept telling me it couldn't find the target or something.

deleting and recreating a shortcut sorted it.

Anyway, LogServer running and I'm getting a large (11mb) ERRORS.lbw file.
