Inspirations?

So I do love reading the background info on each ship, and when I found 1 of the minmatar ships stated its design origin being based on an animal. I became curious what inspires each race to have their own unique designs? Is it functionality, inspiration from nature or something else?

Personally I still think the Dominix was inspired by a potato. But what about the rest of the ships?

Eve ship design has always intrigued me, as well. It's cool to note the designs often include a face or mask, when viewed "dead on". The maelstrom is one of my favorites. It has the appearance of a viking warriors face. Very "Thor" like with the winged helm.

A thumbs up to the artists at CCP! The Tengu is another, the wolfs head in the one articulation, ties beautifully into the dog faced demon that is it's inspiration.

It's no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then, and it's a poor sort of memory that only works backward.

The Gallente ships look like beetles to me. Sort of like inspiration was taken from Egyptian scarab beetles art, plus real life organism beetles.
Caldari have many ships named after birds, but they don't look especially like birds. But probably more winged/bird-like than Amarr, Gallente or Minmatar ships.
Some Minmatar ships seem to have been inspired by flying insects. For example, Vagabond, Claw, Wolf, Probe and Hound.

One thing I always wonder: Some EVE ships have names of Terran animals (Condor, Jaguar, Osprey, Cheetah, Blackbird, Hyena, Rook, etc.) From that can we assume that the real creatures exist in New Eden? Or perhaps that there are some New Eden creatures that are similar (and the settlers gave them the names of their Terran counterparts)?

The same for ships named for Terran mythological creatures/entities (Loki for Minmatar, Harpy, Basilisk, Tengu, Golem, etc. for Caldari) Can we assume that the respective New Eden cultures have knowledge of those myths?

(I realize the short answer is probably, "The devs weren't worried about integrating things into the lore when they named the ships." But since they are a de facto part of the official New Eden world, and therefore a part of the canon, some rationale integrating them in would be nice).

I think you ovverlooked the simple explanation here: Those Terran animals are now mythical in New Eden, thanks to all that time that has passed. That or some colonists brought them with them and they survived. Or a mixture of both.

Considering that some of the races in New Eden didn't suffer from an era of dark ages after the EVE gate's collapse (Jove) it's likely that there were a small number of complete terraforming projects, many of which could have terrestrial animals introduced. The thing with that is that it's been what... 250,000 years since our time. There's no telling that a terrestrial wolf and a wolf in New Eden haven't evolved somewhat. Considering what the Russians have managed to do with the Silver Fox in the last 50 years... I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out Slaver Hounds have Hyena dna or something.

The current year is YC 115 (AD 23151), which makes this roughly 21138 years from now. I think you added a zero too much.

A proposed answer has been: The Universal Translator.

The capsuleers of New Eden do not actually speak modern day English when talking to each other; they speak all kind of various languages that none of us players are able to decipher. But, the Universal Translator does not only translate between capsuleers; it also translates for us, the players, into a language we understand!

As such, the "real" names of the various ships (as what they are called by people in New Eden) are not Raven, Vagabond or Harpy, but that are the names the Universal Translator provides them.

All of the SoE ships are modeled to incorporate alcubierre drives, probably referencing both the exploration/experimentation that SoE does with the nature of the drive itself. (being an experiemntal design for exploring space)

There was an old art dev-blog that was not re-released iirc that talked about the inspiration for the new destroyers, most based off of WW2 vehicles iirc.

Not sure about the rest, but the Tornado looks very much like a bow/boomerang/throwing weapon which could have been the inspiration for it, would fit nicely given it's primary role.
