I'm a bit bleh about Fiat, but the 500 Abarth was the first real Abarth in decades.

and Abarth makes awesome pocket rockets.

Fiat 500 Abarth Asseto Corse: 200HP under that bonnet.

the Abarth has "only" 133HP base, which can be upgraded to 160 if you get the Esse Esse kit.
doesn't seem much by american standarts, but we're talking about a inline4 1.4litre turbo engine.


in a car that is just a bit bigger than a Smart.

funnily enough... i was thinking about getting meself one of those polo gti`s next year ...has anyone got one and if so are they worth it ?

well the GTI might be a good buy, but the car might be a bit heavy.

it is the yardstick to where every hothatch is compared tho.

as an alternative, why not the bmw 1 series M? basically a 135i coupe with weight shaved off and a tuned up engineCool.

well i was thinking of the 1 series but its i little too big for just myself .I seldom carry passengers in my car as it stands as my missus has her own car .And tbh i rarely do more than 5k miles in an average year

so some of the readers of this post are gonna say "u mad bro" why buy a hothatch when you cant justify it !. well im now in my mid forties and our mortagage is paid of in around 5 years . we pretty much have every concievable bloody modern gadget that money can buy and we dont have any debts (i dont even have a bloody credit card ) and the wife wants to pay for me to to next years FF as she is going to hawaii with her mum next year .

I've never liked the mass produced Italian cars, I alwaus thought the Germans and the Japanese made better cars at the 15 - £30k price bracket. I'm currently driving a Skyline and it's the best car I've ever owned. It's not fancy and I'll never pull women with it but it does the job until I win the lotto to by that Aston Martin I0've always dreamed about.

same thing, different skin.

thing is, like every other italian car, it will drive fast, the engine will be quite rev happy and will have quite the punch.


until it brokes down, the buttons fall off, and the doors simply fly away, which happens quite oftenP.

I've both drove and been a backsteat passenger on a series 1 coupe (123d to be more precise), and I can assure you that the space in the back is quite small. 2 adults in there will be travelling, altho somewhat confortable, quite constricted.



another option... hmm... mercs are... fine but too big. Hot hatches atm are basically either civic type-R's, Abarth 500's or Golf GTI's, altho the Abarth is more of a supermini than a hothatch.

bit bigger, you have the lancer evo.

yeah but everywhere I've seen the same issue with italian cars: they drive fast, until they broke down for some odd reason, several times.
things have improved when they shifted to Bosh electronics, however they still have are a bit prone to simply stop working.


the most excaberated case comes from ferrari. sure they drive fast and they are very powerful, but some owners that I know of, say that if they need to do a checkup to the engine every 200km or so.

Don't like Italian affordable cars, just the Alfas. The new Giulietta is actually quite nice.

And they're fast...really fast (for European cars). I still have to chuckle when people say things like 200 hp as if it's a lot. A friend of mine has a supercharged Mustang GT with 510 hp. Then again, Europe had the genius idea of screwing people over by putting taxes on engines, so it's quite rare to see any car with any amount of balls that doesn't sound like a turbocharged weed eater for less than 90k.

I like how the alfa 159 looks tbh. those headlights really make the car very aggressive.

My experience with Italian engineering is...

...great aesthetics...
...underengineered for the task...
...not very reliable

Which it's a pity, as the Giulietta is hawt.

And I always had a crunch for French cars, actually.

Yes, that's precisely the reason why I'll never buy a mass-produced Italian car...they just don't last. Old Italian cars like the Fiat Panda were awesome because they were like a brick on wheels, but like I said, they were like a brick on wheels.

Speaking of French cars, I really like the new Renault Megane. It reminds me of an Audi for some strange reason. They're also very reliable and very safe, while being very affordable too.

as long as it isn't the 1.5 dCI, then yeah.

that mass-produced engine might be economic and have power across a wide band, but from what I've seen, every single one of those engines is pretty much programmed to self destruct once you hit the 120.000km barrier, unless you do extensive maintenance on it (from timing belts to oil changes and turbocharger maintenance).

electronics wise, they are less iffy than italian, that's for sure, but for french cars PGA is still better, reliability wise.
