Have you seen this?

Someone makes a post on EVE forums. Maybe they ask a question or pose an opinion. Someone answers with an off hand, snarky, rude or otherwise dismisive response. The OP then defends him or herself by attacking the rude responder and then...OH CHIT...IT'S ON NOW!

The next several post belittle the OP in defense of the snarky guy. "If you want someone to take you seriously you should not be rude to people that respond" or "with that attitude it is no wonder you have no friends that will help you" or "If you want help you should not use such language."

Meanwhile, snarky dude guy gets a pass.

It is very funny to watch this play out. Do people expect rude responses to legitimate posts go unchecked just because they are made by friends?

I tend to attack anyone who is rude to me in response to a post. Just makes sense to return favors, but these damned white knights are a new kind of butt hurt (looking at you Taoist Dragon & the like)

Any who, Just posting after reading several such posts and wondered if anyone else noticed.

PEACE

It was a general response not specific, but if you need an example: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=3917810#post3917810

Here is a case in point. If I repond to Sabiz as he/she deserves I will be ganged on by anyone who friends him/her despite the fact thet Sabiz is an idiot

Ask a question in the right way and most people are more than willing to help out, even goons (grr™), post an opinion or idea that stands up to scrutiny, has a sensible case to back it up, ie: not tinfoil, acknowledge that others views on it can, and often do differ and sensible discussions will be had.

Alternatively post a pants on head "special" idea, whine that you got ganked in a PvP game, don't research anything before posting etc, and people will ridicule you for doing so. Many players don't tolerate fools, and they make it obvious via the forums and ingame mechanics, shitposts on the forums will often have an effect ingame because the metagame is very much part of the game.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Well resorting to ad hominems rarely garners you any favours.

And, whilst Sabiz may have not chosen the most eloquent and succinct manner in which to respond to your original post....the brevity of the post was sufficient.

To elaborate slightly on Sabiz post.....

"What was the point of this thread if not to troll? If we take the definition of troll as "In Internet slang, a troll is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a forum, chat room, or blog), either accidentally or with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion." then your original post clearly fits at least one of these definitions."

And thats what you are doing wrong.

Completely uncalled for! That is horribly offensive to myself and my ancestors, as well as everyone's ancestors, and even your ancestors' ancestors' former roomates' ancestors.

I demand a formal Honor Duel between OP and Sabriz.

Since I am a creepy roleplayer, I demand a naked mud wrestling honor duel done completely in text emotes set in the magnificent CQ palaces of Jita 404.

Because roleplay.

On the EVE forums I simply assume everyone has an average IQ of 1. Then I don't get annoyed with them. Just feel guilty for making them look stupid... shouldn't pick on stupid people but its hard not to.

My point, although not exactly. **** posts should be tolerated in a perfect world. In a less than perfect world they should be ridiculed, but In no world should an attempt to defend a **** post be un-allowed.

I make at least 1 **** post a day...and so?

I dunno, maybe he's from some culture where white is bad and black is good.

Snarky is funny and more importantly, snarky is short. People might have skipped the op because it was too long, but they read Sabriz's post.

Yeah, the snarky, rude and otherwise dismissive trolls are prone to gang bang and always jump in to defend their 'Comrade In Arms'.

I wouldn't call them a 'White Knight' since they don't seek justice nor do they defend the innocent. To put it nicely, they are more akin to being a Rabble Rouser, constantly fueling the flame war.

The best defense is to just ignore them which is very tough to do. If there's a need to address their remarks, make sure it's short, sweet and to the point. More importantly be sure to follow the Rules Of Conduct set forth in the Forum Rules.

Of course the best offense to use against them is the 'Report' option, just click the little Flag icon next to the time-stamp in the header of their posted reply and let the moderators handle it. If the moderators don't take care of it, then file a complaint with Customer Service.

Wouldn't call it a 'white-knight effect', but the general disposition of these forums does seem to be abrasive and dismissive, moreso than discussion that happens in-game. 'l2p' and 'give me your stuff' being common replies in order to seem flippant and 'cool'. Yeah, EVE's got its whole cuttthroat nature about it, but c'mon, no need to discourage discussion.
