Criminals...

a), don't expect to be captured, so they give a F of punishment
b), do expect to be captured, so they give a F of their victims
c) are totally nuts and don't give a F of anything

Now, consider that anything you do on positive criminals, you will also do it on some undeserving innocents, and ask yourself why those innocents should be deemed less important than the others so it's worth to sacrifice them for the greater good

I am not going to get into this debate as it is cyclical. If you think this fine example of a citizen of the planet of Earth should still be alive and be allowed to merry a 25 year old, your dream society is no less grim without capital punishment then it would be if capital punishment was much more prevalent...just saying

EDIT: Also, your argument also is based on the assumption that all criminals are always criminal. Extreme punishments would decrease the prevalence of crimes of passion and entry level crimes that younger humans find themselves participating in before they hit the hard crimes, so to speak. You punish those minor crimes much more severely, ie. stockades, you would see fewer delinquents evolving into hardened criminals....imho

"Being a criminal is bad for you" is about as deterrent as "smoking is bad for you", "eating in excess is bad for you" or "driving drunk is bad for you". "It will not happen to me!" is the Psychology 101 reason why people does all sorts of stupid, evil or insane things...

So, I have a better plan: do everything in your hands to ensure a dign living to everyone and then let's see how many of them are inclined to give it up to become criminals.

It will not be any worst than try to scare the desperate, stupid and insane with a boogeyman, and certainly will make for a way better world to everyone who is not a criminal. Blink

Unfortunately for your example, the first and the last have seen drastic reductions with public awareness initiatives Blink

Secondly, crime in the industrialized nations has steadily dropped over the past century and it is not because we have gone soft on criminals.....well we have gone soft on those that can claim "I stopped my meds" as they have gotten a relatively free ride when they commit crimes Ugh

The last thing I will say to you is that I never want to hear you ever cry about criminality as you seem not to want to punish people just because someone innocent may get punished.

Also, I want to make it clear that white collar crime, although typically 'non-violent', should be punished more severely than blue collar crime as it affects many more lives with a single socicopathic decision.

I need you to clarify this statement. I feel like I know what you are talking about, but I am lost with "dign."

No. The reason why people do stupid or evil things, outside of those persons that are certifiably crazy, is because they were not taught to be responsible for their actions, they were not taught how to empathize, and the complete lack of sever deterrents to criminal activity for young persons. These three things breed the mentality of, 'I won't get caught, this won't happen to me, or I am not scared of the punishment.'

Dignified?

In other news: the "knockout" incidents Krixtal linked to, made a local paper in Dutchland today.

In before the local inepts (be it socially, emotionally or mentally) are going to try this for kicks. I'll be watching my back. Straight

Excuse me? Do you have the slightest idea of how it was the prison system in the early 20th century, compared to how it is now? Shocked

You totally misread that. First, I didn't talked about not punishing criminals. I talked about what do you do when you apply a irreversible punishment to a innocent. And second, you're easy to waste the life and health of innocents...

Picked the wrong translation, the word I was looking for is "decent, respectable, dignified". That is, a living where your rights are real and not just pretty words.

Interestingly enough, if everyone had a decent living, the chances that all children were taught the right teachings would be astornomically higher than now.

People pretty much need to block these things out or they will go insane. All the murdering, raping, slavery, religious nuts, terrorism, war and other **** is always out there but it's not healthy to think about it.

But like I said, you just have to let these things go, because worrying about it won't do anything other than damage your mental health.

I agree with the sentiment, but going around pretending all is well while wearing rose-colored glasses never, ever solved anything.

You're absolutely right. My point was that we have to pick our fights. We get news from our own neighbourhood, the entire country and most other countries. There's crime, drugs, war and other things only some of us can affect.

There's no point for a european person to worry about gangbangers getting shot in L.A. or serial killers chopping up women in Chicago. They should focus on the problems in their own vicinity. The problems they may be able to solve. Being emotionally involved in every problem you hear about is just going to make you depressed / give you anxiety.

Never worrying about anything is a different thing completely and it can be a problem in itself.

Welp...........getting a bit skeptical about some of the reported "Knockout Punching".

One victim claims that after the act, the whole group of kids laughed.

If they knocked him out, how could he possibly know they were laughing ???
