What Is The Shimmering Light I See.........

What is the shimmering halo light I see coming from ship outside of stations? I think it is some sort of shield, but I've always wondered what it was. They usually turn it on before a duel.

Can you be more specific? Is the shimmer more of a "light rays" type effect or more of a "wavy, distorted light" effect?

It is shield or armor hardeners turned on

Sensor boosters give out shimmering glow that looks almost like crepuscular rays.

Tracking enhancers give out a shimmer that looks more like the sweep of traditional radar screen.

ECCM gives out a shimmer that looks like lacework.

Armour hardeners, armour reppers, shield hardeners and shield boosters all produce surface effects on the ships that are running them.

to elaborate on the last bit...

-armor hardeners give a give a golden glow
-shield hardeners have a faint blue web-like glow offset around the ship a little
-armor repairs have a crawling green web look
-shield boosters have an effect similar to the shield hardier but with a little more offset, is brighter and sends a pulse across the surface of the ship occasionally
