Can we consider the launcher a failed experiment and remove it?

I have had 0 issue with the launcher, just because your launcher is corrupt doesn't mean that it needs removal.

This, I only go to the launcher for patching, is too slow to log in with.

Firstly, it takes like... seconds.
Secondly, his complaint is that they reboot the server, nothing to do with the launcher.
Thirdly, if you were to squeeze his complaint into a complaint about the launcher, it would be about patching, thus bypassing the launcher is not an option.

Hmz.

Server reboot...

What?What?

Confused how one is related to the other.

P.s.

3 PC's...
Clients installed on all of them.
NO problems with none of the launchers ever since release.

Oh I see, so your post was totally out of context with the thread?
Perhaps it would have served better in it's own thread entitled "Faster EVE".

Apologies for my confusion.

Its failing every single patch... time to remvoe it? Or hire decent programmers?

As I'm a programmer myself and had exactly 0 issues with the launcher, I can only tell you my experience: 99% of the software issues I had to debug for my clients were generated by wrong system configuration on their side or user error.

This especially applies to Windows machines, as Windows is very volatile. There can be hundreds of reasons why some users experience issues while others don't. I'll list a few for you (hopefully it would help):

- Some users on this forum experienced false positive virus alert for EVE's executable when using AVG anti-virus. Depending on the configuration of your AV software, it may or may not automatically move the file to quarantine. EVE's updater application uses torrent protocol to download an update. When a file is removed from the package, the torrent client can fail to proceed. Since many modern AV software has an option for an automatic quarantine/deletion, (including Windows' default Malicious Software Removal Tool, Comodo, Avast,...) you might want to check out your AV software configuration.

- AV software with Firewall, including stand-alone firewalls can also block certain programs from accessing the Internet if it suspects that something fishy is going on. This is also vulnerable to false positives. From my personal experience, I had previously some issues with Avira's firewall.

- Some ISPs throttle or block torrent file transfer. You may experience issues because of that.

- Always have up to date OS updates.

- Always have the most stable graphics drivers and expect potential problems when you first update the drivers. It happened both to ATi and nVidia latest "stable" drivers to fail in the past. Roll back to previous stable version that you know it worked if needed.

- EVE has recently switched to DirecX 11. If you are having issues with the launcher and the game fails to start, open the launcher and go to settings (button in the top right corner). Go to DirectX tab and select "DirectX 9". See if that resolves your issues.

- Check if you have enough free space on the partition where EVE is being installed. Remember that you must have almost double the space: for the downloaded data and the game installation itself.

- If you are not using SSD, defragment the partition where EVE is being downloaded and/or installed. Do not use Windows' default defragment tool. There's plenty of popular freeware tools available that are way better.

- Windows registry is a horrible concept from last century that Microsoft for some weird reason is still holding. There are several popular freeware registry cleaning tools, but so far I haven't found any efficient enough. Registry can also become fragmented or corrupted, which can be a reason for almost untraceable software issues. The worst part is, the registry will become corrupt with normal day-to-day usage even if you didn't have any malicious software on your system ever. There are two real options when it comes to resolving registry corruption: 1) Create a new windows user and try running the launcher from it. This can resolve corruption of HKEY_CURRENT_USER (and your user's entry in HKEY_USERS). 2) Reinstall Windows. I do this once a year minimum since it's critical for me as a programmer to have a clean working system.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. There's many other things that can go wrong.

I understnad why they wanted/needed the launcher, but i do so miss the old opening screens and music with every expansion, was part of the fun, like unwrapping a christmas present every time you logged in.

They have re-introduced it with the new character selection screen. Character selection screen contains intro music and will change with each expansion.

No complaints myself. For me, the launcher has worked every time. Never had an issue. Those who have issues should evaluate their own computers rather than the launcher.

How is that a **** up? It's called maintenance. They do it to keep the game stable.

The launcher doesn't seem to check if the client needs an update after the server comes back up after a restart/downtime, only when the launcher starts. I find that irritating but there might be an option somewhere I couldn't be bothered to look for. Beyond that I don't have problems with the idea in general and haven't had any issues that I would directly attribute to the launcher.

Can we consider the OP a failed experiment and remove him as well? It's like the current generation of gamers(regardless of age and time spent being a gamer) is full of entitled brats that have no clue what they're saying. You complaining because CCP needs to maintain the stability of EvE, at times requiring extended downtimes, is so childish it amazes me that you can even figure out how to log in.

Launcher is fine, and this coming for someone who was highly against it to begin with when it was announced. Sure, there was that little problem some people had with Rubicon release, but it was a very simple fix, and it probably were those trying to get the game downloaded before CCP actually was ready like me. But other than that, I have had zero problems with it.

I haven't had a single one of the myriad issues with the launcher, at all. Not a single one. Mayhaps user-error?

I feel your pain. I have some issues with the launcher it randomly goes completly white when I try to login and I have to restart it a few times so it works again. It is a bit of a pain, maybe its just my launcher, but dont know how to fix it when repair thing and reinstall does nothing so just live with it. I dont mind the launcher as a concept but would prefer my problem to be gone Smile

Start wide, expand further, and never look back

That feature was backed out, unfortunately. Too many issues with ISPs throttling torrent traffic.
