I've heard about this.

It's not as simple as it sounds, apparently, due to some decisions that were made a fair time ago in the development. Not decisions to stop you doing it, just a side effect.

It's due to the code assuming that the character id won't change. To change it, they'd have to dig pretty deeply into the code to make sure they find all the references.

For a pretty minor benefit. The pay-off isn't really worth the effort.

However once it was done it would be done forever, no?

So if eve lasted 10 more years then, eh it would be a good change for 10 years.

They can't end your session without logging you out and logging you in automatically is detrimental to account security.

Thus no log off to character selection.

That's what I heard a while back too.

And if you want to go back to character screen quickly, just leave launcher open when logging in, close the client you have open, and click launch again. That's if you haven't logged in with another character already. Game opens back up to the character screen without having to log in again.

Except with the launcher.

The launcher is able to maintain the flags that say your account information and password are valid and "logged in" so if you keep the launcher open you can click [Play] again after having closed the client and it'll drop you right back into character select :P

I think it works with the launcher because it does not really store your log in information. It just does not clear out the entry field and when you log in again through the launcher, it checks what's in the field. So it's not automatic and not a security risk as no log in information can be read out randomly without user action.

Because that's a whole point for another expansion ...

I have no idea why the thought process behind this hasn't reached the masses yet.

10 years in and EvE can't handle a simple log-to-character selection like every other MMO out for the last 10 years...

Because the man who wrote the code for the new login screen cast an ancient & terrible curse upon it when he was axed in favour of recruiting another artist for tattooed cybernetic vanity items. Before he cleared his desk to make room for the stacks of concept artwork for a new cybernetic armpit with a really cool spider engraved into it or something, he cut his palm and as the blood seeped from the wound and dripped onto the keyboard he cast the dreaded Haram Hum'Shi-La! This ancient curse, this diabolical abomination, has forever tainted the codebase and any who attempt to alter the great works of the coder who cast the curse live only three days in a perpetual nightmare before succumbing to a most dreadful fate.

And that's why you cant have a logout button, jeeeeeeze.

It's funny, if you are not using the launcher to start the game, then there is a LOG OFF button.
Unfortunately it's just closing the client and starting it up again. So not really doing what you would expect.

I only play with 1 account and 1 character, why can't you?

I don't need no smelly character selection screen.

I'm closing this for lack of content. If you'd like for some sort of option to log out from the Character Selection screen, I recommend posting it in the Rubicon feedback thread. Thank you.
