The Almighty came to the small frail woman prostrate upon the ground who had spent 90 days isolated all alone on a liquid fast in a high desert cave in the sweltering heat of summer. From when her eyes wearily opened every morning until she could keep then open no more due to fatigue she spent every minute reading the leather bound worn texts handed down to her and praying in prelude for her chosen career as a spiritual conductor of the sacred ancient rites of the Matari people. For the last three days she had been in delirium, passing in and out of consciousness, waiting faithfully for the word of her God to reveal itself.

In a blinding blue white flash she was propelled upwards through the atmosphere in column of cool air until the mountainous desert landscape below her shrank and the curvature of the planet itself was revealed and then vanished as the blue atmosphere gave way to the blackness of space. She felt no fear, no press of titanic g-forces, as she ascended into the heavens, at the same time her head was cleared, her thirst was slaked, and her body felt no more of the pangs of hunger, suspended in the column of blue white cool air she rotated her body to take in the majesty of her surroundings high above her home world without benefit of spacecraft or spacesuit. The Almighty made his words known to her in sound so pure it soaked into every inch of her body and filled her with awe and love and contentment such as she had never imagined let alone experienced before.

“I have heard your prayers and will grant you a holy mission. Return to your people and tell them their time of bondage will come to a conclusion. Tell them the faithful who have held onto the ways of their progenitors shall be sent an Emissary of the One True God. My Emissary shall lead the people out of the misery of bondage and they shall themselves wrest freedom from the dying hands of those seeking to enslave them, the trickster cultists, and the deluded apologists who stand idly by enabling the evil to prevail by their inaction. I shall give to you a child, he will grown to term within your womb for a period of eighteen months and the doctors and the scientists may marvel at this miracle. You will name him Ray-Of Matar for he shall be born with this Voloval Tattoo. Now return to your people and grant them the good news of their coming emancipation and the coming of my Emissary.”

When the sound stopped she was instantly transported back to the cave feeling strong and refreshed clothed in the finest garments and the cave walls glittered with encrusted diamonds and the rarest gemstones of New Eden. Where once had stood her hand made branch woven cupboards that moments before had sagged beneath her meager containers of liquid nourishment and water, now stood strong wooden shelves upon their surfaces everyone bore fine carvings depicting the ancient tales of the seven tribes, and they were stacked with the finest food and drink in a quantity capable of feeding her village for a month. She walked to the mouth of the cave and pulled back the exquisite tapestry that now hung where a tattered tarp use to flutter in the desert breeze and stepped into the night and saw a long caravan of torches working their way up the narrow mountain path that led to her cave, she had company coming, she had adequate food to feed them, and the resources to pay them to spread the word of the coming of the Emissary. The 75 year old formerly barren woman dropped to her knees weeping and praying thanks to the Almighty for the coming of their emancipation, and the good news of the Emissary growing within her womb.

At last a look at the faith of the Matari, long overdue and very welcome to see it being done.

Very nice story.

Death is nothing more then the searing pain of rebirth.
