Too bad CCP is earning money over dead and poor people.
No way in hell that it will cost CCP real money.

Even when I buy 30 plex with RL money CCP earns big time.

So I donate directly to people that have family there.

i know it's not tax deductable for us as players but does ccp claim it back? i:e as a gift from them Big smile i'm sure they don't, that would just be nasty. profiting from someones misfortune.

anyway i'll give what i can as it's going to red cross not a charity that pays big money to some **** ceo and his buddies who should be giving their time at a much discounted rate or for free.

The primary target audience of this is people who cannot afford to donate lots of real-life money to charity at the drop of a hat, but are spacerich enough to take some plex off the in-game market and know that they are getting at least $15 a plex to charity.

By all means, donate directly to charity if you can! That's great! Yes, buying plex directly from CCP to donate WOULD be silly, and not a completely ideal use of your money!

I can't afford to donate very much of my real life money right now, but what I can do is sell off some of my internet spaceship crap to buy plex, and donate that. And I think its nice of CCP to make that possible.

This exactly. There are people in eve who could theoretically afford to donate a couple hundred USD in PLEX, but can barely afford to eat IRL....otherwise known as college students with too much time on their hands. This is perfect for them.

the only way they could possibly be getting anything out of the deal is if they claim it as a charitable donation from themselves as a company, if anything its costing them some money to process the deal not to mention the markup they lose to 3rd party gtc sellers. person a (a player, any player) gives money to person b (ccp) and person b gives that money to charity.

A little update for you guys!

Wired released this article earlier today.

A few hours before that, we hit a value of $10,000 in PLEX. A couple of hours ago, we passed $15,000.

You guys are amazing Big smile

I initially thought that CCP is giving out the 20 dollars a Plex costs the player and then adds 15 dollars for each PLEX donated.
Now I read the article again and it seems that CCP gives out nothing. The player pays 20dollars/20 euros (in europe) for 1 X PLEX and then CCP pays 15 dollars / not-15-euros for each PLEX given. They don't give something from their accounts.

As for your remark, you may be right, but I doubt it costs them 5 dollars/euros per PLEX. They may not do much money in the process but usually calls for donations sound like "Whatever you donate, we match". The idea is awsome, helping people in need is something that everyone should do, as long as they have the means. Profiting in any degree from the donations is wrong.

i'm sure they wouldnt do that. that would make them no better than the massive rogue charities we see on the high streets etc. the first cut goes to some ******* who bagged a cushy number as the ceo of a **** charity they doesnt want to help people.

I do not know how the tax code is Iceland is structured, but if it parallels the USA tax code, then CCP will certainly get a tax deduction for the monetary donation of PLEX to the cause. If you look deep into CCP's finances, you will most likely find that CCP regularly donates to charitable causes because over 75% of businesses do. The PLEX for GOOD program will increase their donation, but they will NOT profit from it. Why? Because they aren't taxed at 100% of their profits. If they are taxed at, say, 30% of their profits then for every $1000 they donate to charity, they save $300 in taxes.
Hmmm... Give $1000 get $300 back - sounds like a trade hub scam, right?
CCP isn't giving YOUR money to charity. YOU gave CCP your money in exchange for a PLEX. Therefore, the money is now CCP's money and if they donate it to charity then they get the tax break. It's important to remember that charitable contributions only lower your taxes. Whatever the tax rate is, subtract it from 100% and that's the percentage of the contribution that the business simply loses. In this example, 30% tax means that 70% of the money CCP donates to the red cross (that would be $14,000 of a $20,000 donation) comes out of their pockets with NOTHING IN RETURN! If CCP makes a donation of $20,000 and their tax rate is an astronomical 75%, then CCP still loses $4000 by running this event. And that's not a deductible business loss, it's simply the part of the contribution that they don't get credited back to them as lower taxes.
The only thing CCP gets out of this drive is media exposure. CCP is a business that depends on Paying Customers (that's us, the players) in order to survive. Will CCP get new players because of this drive? Certainly. But if they took the money they are going to lose by donating to the red cross and spent that amount on a targeted media blitz, they would get far more players than the feel-goods who will enter New Eden because of this event.

TL;DR - CCP is going to lose RL money because of this, and that money is going to help people whose lives have been destroyed by a hurricane. That makes CCP the Good Guys.

i dont really care about profit, not when its about charity.

But ccp asks europeans trough their website 20 euro for a plex, thats about 27 dollar.
And Americans are charged 15 dollar trough their website.

Even if u fund this only with ingame plexes and ingame money, at some point real life money gets involved because plex can only be created outside the game.

So it raises a question for me why only 15$ is being send /plex.
As an european it would be 15$ for the charity and 12$ for ccp, nevertheless it should not stop people from participating if they want too.

I think you sort of missed the point.. The plex being donated for the red cross are already in game, they have been paid for at some time previously by us, the players.

IE; I buy 4 plex from CCP @ $17 each, I then sell those plex to an isk rich player in game. He then donates those plex to the plex drive, ccp then donate $15 for every plex donated to the red cross.

That $15 is coming out of CCP's pocket, not yours or mine.

Nobody is suggesting you buy plex from CCP to donate, the idea is you donate plex you have purchased in game with isk.

My opinions are mine.

  If you don't like them or disagree with me that's OK.- - - - - - Just don't bother Hating - I don't care

It really is getting harder and harder to justify $23 a month for each sub.

Noone requires you to buy PLEX for RL cash. Donate directly if you so want - expenses will be lower for sure. But in my case I am donating PLEX that I bought in-game. And in this case it's an awesome way to give 15$ just by playing.

Yesterday I've won a Tempest fleet in Somer Blink. So I exchanged it for a PLEX to help with the problems caused by a Typhoon. Now I realize the magnitude of the irony
