The new stars

I like the idea of giving the star field more range of brightness, and I more or less think it looks good. However it just seems far too bright to me, the star field is drowning out the new nebule. It's too "foreground" looking and distracts from ships in space, etc.

The brightness isn't just for the Hell of it, you know. Those stars are actually closer to you. All of those bright stars you see are actually stars you can view on the star map. If some of them have a "foreground" appearance, they should, because nebulae span multiple light years and it would be pretty ridiculous to have every star behind a nebula.

I like the star field the way it is now. Earlier versions looked a little sloppy, but this version looks really good, I think.

Oh yeah I totally agree, I love the idea. I just think that visually its too bright as a whole. It just needs some adjustment, but I would certainly keep the feature.

While the star field certainly is brighter, I don't think the change is drastic. Personally, I don't really have a problem with the brightness. Such an appearance isn't so different from space satellite imagery.

As you know space photography is generally taken with very very long exposures. Without it you wouldn't be seeing much of anything besides stars, and they wouldn't be anywhere near as bright as they are in game. In the end its just an artistic decision how bright things should be. As such what it should be comes down to personal taste, there's no real right answer to it.

A background imo shouldn't be competing with the foreground for attention.

I respectfully disagree.

Current starfield on SISI looks excellent. It's great that you can pick out the star you're jumping to. It works perfectly well in a mission, not distracting at all - just adds to the 'feel' of the game as far as I'm concerned.

TQ is incredibly bland by comparison.

I still prefer a darker background with less stars as in the first tests of the new nebulae

The bright starscape / dark shadows environment on SISI creates an incredibly vivid feeling of depth that is missing on TQ. I say it's perfect.

Brackets and tac-overview are there to help with situational awareness when you need to focus on other ships.

The correct representation of space would have been completely black with no pretty nebulas except some small faint colors.
Do you want every system in eve to be black? thats how space is. Everything else is just a matter of what everyone likes more.

Nope, I don't think most people want a completely realistic look (I don't). The nebule are obviously extremely exaggerated, but they look great. It's just an artistic question. For me, the brightness is a bit of a distraction, the sky looks more milky now with the new nebule loosing some of their prominence to the rest of the sky. My first reaction to the change was "ooo pretty, shiny" but I think the novelty wears off quickly as generally you don't want the background to graphically dominate the gameplay in the foreground.

Just to clarify though, I DO love the idea of having the gates point to bright stars. I just think the sky in general should be toned down a notch.
