Black screen after login - not a driver/program crash (with workaround)

Patched Ok then logged in.
Briefly see a login bar.
Then there is some kind of resolution change and blackness.
The game is there, underneath the blackness - if I do a keyboard logout it returns to windows.

Went back to launcher, chose DirectX9 - no change.
Turned off SLI and retried - no change.

During all of this when the screen goes black my AMP which passes through the HDMI to the TV goes bonkers trying to lock onto a signal, the sort of thing you'd get with an invalid HDMI resolution.

Quick workaround for me was to do an ALT-Enter when in the black screen to set Eve to Windowed mode - this works fine.
Fixed window appears to work fine too.
Changing back to fullscreen and we get either blackness or a strange corrupted picture.
