Hey Guys,

Im currently just finishing off training my cruiser and was wondering to skill for tech 2 then tech 3 cruisers of spend time training into battlecruisers or battleships.

I have spent alot of time skilling up all my support skills. Most of my skills are level 4. Level 3 the lowest.

This is just for fleet PVP. My plan was to get teir 3 cruisers with really good skill levels and then move on to getting teir 3 ships for other races. Am i missing out at all by not getting battlecruisers/battleships?

Thanks

That really depends on what kind of fleet PvP you are looking for.

Fleets usually fly some kind of doctrine, which forces you to use a specific ship type. So you should look for a corp and inquire about their doctrines before getting too committed on a specific ship.

The large fleets in null-sec wars usually use Battleships. Roaming fleets usually use smaller ships and especially with the warp changes in Rubicon, I expect HACs to become even more popular. Wormhole citizens love T3 cruiser for their relatively low mass. FW often uses frigates and destroyers, as they can enter all/most plexes. And then there's Bomber's Bay which only flies stealth bombers.

Oh, and what do you mean with "teir 3 cruisers"? The tiercide got rid of tiers. The only place where the word "tier" is still used is for Tier 3 battlecruisers a.k.a. Attack Battlecruisers. You might mean Tech 3 cruisers, which are quite expensive and not something a newbie should fly (you even lose skill points if you die in one).

I'd not overlook battlecruisers. Medium hulls are in general worth spending training time on.

Medium hulls are by far the most diverse hull size in EVE:

* Tech 1 (4 per race)
* Recon (2 per race)
* Heavy Assault (1 per race)
* Heavy Interdictor (1 per race)
* Logistics (1 per race)
* Strategic Cruiser (1 per race)
* Battlecruisers (3 per race)
* Command Ships (2 per race)
* Navy Cruisers
* Pirate Cruisers

All but one of them, Attack Battlecruisers, use medium weapons too, so the skills carryover.

Hacs should be 2 per race : )

Each ship has it's own use. If you are doing fleet pvp it is great being able to easily ship into the requirements the FC is setting. If you are just doing small gang, it may be better to stick to T1 ships since T2/T3 would run a little more but also runs the risk if you get blobbed on for being a shinier gang. Get familiar with the T1 counterparts and when you are comfortable upgrade to T2

What sort of roles do battlecruisers/battle ships come in. I mean when would you pick a battlecruiser or battle ship over a tech 3 cruiser.

Thanks for the input

I would pick a BC on a lower skilled character, or if I wanted to fit a warfare link on a ship that the opposing fleet will not likely primary.

I would pick a battleship for when I expect to be able to start the engagement at maximum range, or when our fleet has a strategy revolving around battleships. Battleships are quite cheap to lose once you consider insurance and take quite a beating.

I would pick a strategic cruiser (tech 3) when ISK is not important and maximum performance and flexibility is required at any price.

I would pick an Attack Battle Cruiser (ABC) when I expect to lose the ship and just want to do as much damage as possible before that.

Of course, you should discuss ship choice with your fleet commander. They can have all sorts of tricks in mind that make certain ships important.

Speaking as someone in Faction War low-sec...

- battleships are good for either attacking/defending structures or brawling against similar sized (or larger) ships. They are incredibly slow though (and will be more so after the coming expansion tomorrow) and are vulnerable to being overrun by smaller ships when alone.

- battlecruisers are for when you want to take on large groups of smaller foes with limited numbers... or you need some of the tank/gank of a battleship without the immobility of a battleship.

- Tech 3 ships are when I...
---- have a lot of spare money
---- am very drunk
---- have an awesome plan that I know will work.
---- have a some support as back up.
---- some combination of the above.

I personally can't rationalize spending 400+ million ISK on a single ship that is, ultimately, a cruiser at its heart**. And since I never have to worry about storage space or not having a friendly station nearby I can afford to buy multiple ships and fit them with a different specialty... then proceed to not care [much] if they get blown up.

However... if I lived in wormhole space I would probably be singing a different tune. Storage is at a premium there so it makes more sense to put more money into one ship that can do "everything" to minimize logistics and clutter.

- Tech 2 cruisers somewhat fall into the same category as Tech 3s... but swallowing the ~200 million hull cost is a bit easier for some reason (maybe because I know I can fly around a Tech 2 cruiser around low-sec and be only of mild interest to people... but in a Tech 3 everyone and their mother several systems over come to hunt me down).

**People who say they can get "battleship level" tanks or damage (which, for reference, is 150k+ EHP or 700+ DPS respectively) on a Tech 3 are referring mostly to gimmicky fits that will almost never be seen outside of a station's undock radius. There are exceptions to this however.

It's a lot more complex than you think it is. But here's the basic gist:

Battleships are mainline DPS; they generally are used in groups (not so much solo) to kill battleships, battlecruisers, and cruisers.

Battlecruisers are mainline DPS; they are often used in an antisupport role specifically to kill off frigates/interdictors/cruisers when they are put in a battleship doctrine.

Cruisers are mainline DPS: They are often used in an antisupport role (See above), as heavy tackle (Harder to kill than a frigate), skirmisher, logistics (Space priest) etc. Basically cruisers fill every niche.

Tech 3: Really depends on the fit, can be a dedicated prober, a scout, mainlinedps/antisupport etc.

Tech 2: Depends on the ship. Vagabonds are skirmishers/heavy tackle. Munnins are mainline dps/antisupport, zealots are mainline DPS etc etc etc.

Hope this helps (I know it doesn't really).

If you are planning to fly and fight solo a lot, I'd suggest looking at the Stabber. Then upgrade to a Stabber Fleet Issue. Then upgrade to a Vagabond. Then upgrade to a Cynabal.
