They did this in one of the earlier sisi builds I think and dropped it. I remember maybe a year ago? 18 months? When they were messing with the overview and we had all those overview bugs (ugh remember them!?) As far as I recall it was just the overview that had new icons for ship classes. Don't remember why it got dropped - because they wanted to "do it properly" comes to mind... but its all hazy.

Of course, I could be tripping, but my memory is usually pretty good on this stuff.

Before committing to any changes, I would like the icons to be developed to be more specific. The ISIS icons are pretty much as useless for ship identification as the current ones.

I see a "cruiser". But is it a combat cruiser? Is it a recon? Is it a hictor? Is it a logistic ship? Is it a TIII cruiser? All of these are fundamentally different ship classes, yet they share the same icon.

YES! +1
This is just to good an idea, but then again CCP has an excellent record of ignoring good ideas from players. But I always have hope that they will one day be different.

CCP's sand box is EVE Online.  The sand is owned by CCP.  We pay them a monthly fee to throw the sand at each other.  That is all that is here, so move along. Nothing more to be seen.

so you want to change the current white square bracket with ship icon bracket.
And how will we make a difference between a falcon, blackbird and rook (same for other t2 hulls)? In this case u still have to scroll through overview becasue they will all have same icon since its the same hull.

And i agree i love this idea aswell.

the new system will tell you at a glance the ship type, right now there is still no difference between a falcon bracket and a caracal bracket, but at least you will be able to tell between a battleship and a cruiser without any guesswork. if you really need to see the ship type you can still check the overview or just zoom in on that particular ship.

unless a specific ship icon was added for every single ship in the game, which i dont think is really necessary?

This could use some more exposure.

I have often had issues with determining if a ship is a battlecruiser or cruiser....or cruiser or destroyer. I know you can just read Type, but it would be nice to have just a glancing look at the overview. I tend to look at icons first because for me an icon gives faster visual information than words do.

As a side note, in case anyone missed the thread I accidentally started concerning this idea, here is a rough glimpse of this idea...such a sexy overview :P

Just fix the size of the red crosses. Adding different icons for each ship class is just going to over complicate it and probably add load to the server and client.

So that's a NO (-1) from me

ideally the icon would face the same as the ship also giving you info on direction it is heading instead of just a static box.

What red crosses have to do with displaying player ships in overview? Also game already has brackets of different size for different ship types so there is no overcomplication or any increase of load on server or client of any sort (server load is completely irrelevant in this matter).

Opinions are like assholes. Everybody got one and everyone thinks everyone else's stinks.

Nope, I remember it too. I think it was right around when they were trying some new neocom stuff and drop that and the old "new" ship icons. I believe they got far enough to make separate icons (for npc's only I think) to discern between frigs/dessies and BCs/BSs.

"Tomahawks?"

"----in' A, right?"

Why should we be able to tell at a glance the difference between a Falcon, Blackbird & Rook?
We could do with less information.
Deep Scan should only tell us that it's a 'Cruiser class ship'

We have all watched space movies. Where they detect 'something at maximum range' then as it closes they slowly refine the details on what kind of ship it must be. And the last thing they find out is who is flying it, normally from a visual identification or radio hail.
Instead in EVE, the second they enter the system we know who the pilot is. And the second they are in deep scan range we know their exact ship class & what name they have given it.

Where is the fuzzyness of information, where is the mystery, where is the discovery, the trepidation at not knowing exactly what is heading your way?

The Devs are aware of the whole thing already

It's going to come, the thing they did with the SIS was to introduce the symbols so that next expansion not everyone is freaking out when they show up as they usually do when "totally unexpected" things happen in the game.
