My advice: wait a few months. I'm a long time player of the X-Series, and they've delivered great games so far, but their launch is extremely buggy and by that it can give wrong impressions. In the course of months, they usually release alot of patches (think tehre's already 2 out now to fix severe issues) and with the large patches comes extra free content as a form of apology.

This has been the case of every X game released so far. Egosoft is a small company releasing an A-grade game, hence the buggy releases. But they care about their players, so they make work of great patches and continued support (and the community is great too)

If you do look for a replacement game, I can advice some of the older ones. They're still pretty shiny too The X3 trilogy has nice games each with a different focus.
X3: Reunion is usually revered for it's good combat-balances with smaller ships (in the X-series)
X3:TC: is great for building a trade-empire and capturing hostile larger ships more reliably (also has alot of various plots/stories)
X3: Albion Prelude: Trade-empire as well, with added stockmarket, however there's a war going between the universe & a major faction, so this is more for combat-oriented trade-empire-builders.

Note: all these games got great conversion/overhaul mods as well, as Egosoft supports modding. Do note that these games share EvE's (old?) learningcurve.

The old X series are totally recommendable, this latest one... well...

- no joystick control
- no camera control(!)
- no radar(!!)
- no map(!!!)
- can't control your ship while you're using menus
- so they implemented a new version of their (in)famous UI consisting of gazillions of menus within menus within menus Ugh
- oh, and you only can fly a single ship

Also is buggy as hell, performs like a drunk hippopotamus swiming in molasses and everything that's not a ship or a station looks 10 years old. So, wait six months and re-evaluate then, the modding community is gorgeous, and maybe not all is lost with the above terribad design decissions.

I bought it because I love the X series but in all honesty don't buy it, wait 2/3 months and then look. I've bought it and played 29minutes. I see what they are trying to do and hope they get there but other than bugs (which egosoft always fix) the game mechanics decisions are crazy. As poster above says, no radar? map is used by not being able to see where you fly. Mouse clicking in space is the only way to target.

I could go on.

That said, docking with my first ship and landing, then looking back as I walked inside the ship and seeing space through the docking forcefield that was the actual space outside the ship was cool.

I just hope they do their usual trick of sorting it all in a number of epic updates because egosoft always roll out constant updates to their games.

Let's hope they stand the initial burising and burning and can make something right. But the no joystick, no radar thing is seriously taking me back. Admiteddly, I already was not very interested because of the single ship thing...

...and i am pondering to go and buy that effing Retaliator on next week's sale, my stupid heart be damned. **massive facepalm**

Yeah I agree, let's hope they get stuck in Monday and kick some update ass. If they don't then the last bastion of dev awesomeness will be lost to us :(

I got mixed feeling on it, but what it really boils down too is this.

It really feels like a console game(even though it is only available on pc Roll) so, do you like console games?

No Joystick and no Radar...... WTF

Joystick is essential in flight sims.

and how are you supposed to track targets at range without radar? Is everything highlighted on the HUD.

Apparently you mouse-click on stuff on the screen and that's how you lock it. I've read also some confusing accounts on being uanble to move the camera, but don't know what camera and where.

And anyway you're not flying a fighter but a larger and bulkier ship.

This game seriously need re-evaluation once modders and Egosoft do the dirty work. But that's a sort of X-series tradition; they're released in a state better defined as "the publisher didn't wanted to keep paying development without some sells income".

If you are planning on buying XR hoping that it is as good as X3....don't.

Atm its bugged to hell, crashes more than a 3 wheeled Yugo, and the dialogue....is just awful. Space flight is nice, but the station interactions are terribad. They claim to be fixing it... we will see about that.

With the steam forum flooded with bad PR about XR at the moment...im sure the price will drop before then just to keep the cash flowing.

Intentionally creating bad press to drive up the probability of a higher discount during a sale. Genius! Pirate

Not only can you not use a joystick, and gamepad translation is poor, but when trying to target stuff when its wizzing round your HUD offscreen they dissapear and re-appear or just don't appear at all.

Then there's the performance issues...

But to give them their dues, they are dealing with bugs and have already patched some stuff already. I just wish i didnt have to restart my game because of a damn bug :/
