I have been watching the entire series from scratch and it seems to me that CCP devs who designed EVE way back in the day were serious Babylon V junkies. Pretty much the 4 races and 5th mesterious race Varlons (jove) and the sleepers are the shadows...

Just wondering if I can get a dev to confirm what me and my brother have observed.

even the myrmadon looks like a minbari Battle Crusier.

the narn are totally the minmatar

the Cintauri are the Ammar

Humans are the Caldari and Minbari are Galente.

Even the Idea for Yuli and concord sound like the Babylon Project for Galatic peace.

anyone up for a JOvian Sunrise?

I think that's a bit of a stretch.

Babylon 5 remains my favorite Science Fiction show of all time, and while ships like the Noctis and Myrmidon are clear homages to B5, Eve certainly isn't based on it.

Also, your misspellings of Centauri, Vorlons, Gallente, Yulai and Galactic (and others) are making my eyes itch.

I can confirm that many of us early developers were Babylon 5 fans. But I think the influence is fairly minimal, the only thing I can say for certain was an influence was the relationship between Minmatar and Amarr, which is similar to Narn and Centauri.

There are quite a few of those loose relations in EVE. Bonus points for the one who can name the sci-fi series that inspired the name of our London Server (Tranquility) Twisted

Eh, I'd be more inclined to say that they both used the same tropes of the genre (e.g. gates, big ships having jump drives, etc.) Just as an example, all of these "similarities" are also present in Master of Orion, which released in 1993, a full year before Babylon 5. Also the Minbari have FAR more in common with Ammar than they do with Gallente.

Recall that the minabari are, at any given time, one dead leader away from committing total hell death genocide against entire races.

Although the Minmatar and the Narn ....yeah...hell the ships even look similar.

Indeed afaik the b5 bible was presented to universal studios back in 1988... so mao and b5 might have evolved from a singular idea.

I will be so happy if this turns out to be Firefly. Or, for those that know the series better by the movie: Serenity.

This is correct. It is actually also based on the name of one of the alien ships in the Gap Cycle. The Gap Cycle is also the inspiration for a well known drug in the EVE-verse. Bonus bonus point if someone knows which Smile

I rather doubt it tbh. Stargates/jumpgates have been around since the late 50's in popular sci fi (example). Likewise the idea of using bigger ships to create their own jump portals, mass drivers (effectively big rail guns) as weapons, etc. has really been around sci fi circles for well over half a century by now.

The slaver/slave dynamic you see in the centauri/narn is also quite common in many works of the genre. B5 is one of my favorite sci fi shows, but in terms of the environment/background it really wasn't the first to the table.

As much as I love Firefly (and it is actually the only sci-fi I've managed to hook my wife on Smile), then sadly it came a bit too late to have much effect on the EVE lore, much of the key lore was already set by the time Firefly started in late 2002.

I just wish there were more episodes, sigh...
