simple. just never build anything you don't produce 100% of the manufacturing materials for yourself.

The minerals you mine are not free.

If you can sell them for more by selling them raw then there is no reason to manufacture stuff.

not that I do much mining but they certainly seem free. only thing it costs is time. the only things I use minerals for on average are reactions.

There are some things you need to keep in mind when manufacturing stuff. And the most important rule is that the end product should sell for more than what the raw materials cost. Otherwise you are just wasting time and isk.

Lets have an example with some numbers.

Lets take a mineral. You can mine 10 of that in an hour. Each mineral is worth 1mil isk. So thats 10mil / hour. Now lets say you build item A out of those minerals. A sells for 0.8mil isk and require 1 mineral each. So by making item A you can make 10 of them and sell them for 8mil isk. The result is that you spend 1 hour to earn 8mil isk by mining the minerals and making item A.

Now lets say that capitalist Graygor wants to make item A too for some isk. However he doesn't want to mine the minerals, so he buys them at a rate of 1mil / mineral (10mil total). He makes 10 Item A and sells them for 8mil as well. Result: a loss of 2mil isk, which means he will stop doing it and instead make something else. But if capitalist Graygor lose 2mil isk for each 10 A he makes, so do you! You could sell the minerals raw and earn 10mil instead of 8 mil. So while the minerals are "free" you are essentially "paying" 10mil isk to sell A for 8 mil isk. Because by making Item A you are eliminating the option to sell the raw minerals for 10mil isk.

This is only relevant if you goal is to earn as much isk as possible. If your goal is to make your own little WH colony with manufacturing stuff then its perfectly fine to consider the minerals for free. Thats what is great about EVE. You make your own game.

Also, I have not factored in the logistics, but there are some tricks to compress minerals down to very little by making items and then refining them again. It has a small loss, but if that loss is less than the loss from making A, then it is clearly not worth making A.

I understand that, mizzy. and it's sound logic and I agree with and practice it. you can be rest assured the things I bother to actually make are worth more than the sum of their parts. otherwise I wouldn't build them. P

FWIW the only issue I have with this thread is I don't want "i'm broke" to become part of the culture. it's perfectly possible to not be broke. it didn't help that alcoholism was presented as a healthy pastime or some type of alternative to managing one's finances to be 'cap stable'. not sure how well a person would make memories when they're often drinking anyway.

then again, I'm a blowhard and frequently wrong

I've been broke, I used to drink--a lot, in my twenties while I was in the military. but I never admitted to anyone that I was broke, I'd try to hide it. so I kinda don't want it to be ok to start a thread about it... here, where I like to spend time. (you know what they say bout the people you hang out with, and that you effect your environment)

EVE players are known for some good things, like ... being sophisticated enough to grasp/enjoy the game, for one. so... you know... imo this topic was a move in the wrong direction.

...opinions. I'm over it if you are
