Yup. Beyond Visual Range engagements would not be very visually exciting. However the MiG-29 which is a excellent dogfighter would make for an exciting performance if they had access to them.

That made me laugh like a little school girl.

Not a fan of Tom Cruise, but he is in some good movies. Top Gun, at least in my opinion, is not one of them.

It was, however, very popular when I was in high school and most people I knew liked it. Some of them joined the Navy based on that movie. I believe none of them ever became naval aviators.

I, on the other hand, much enjoyed "The Hunt for Red October". Both the book and movie made an impression on me. I soon joined after the movie came out. Even went sub duty. Not that I needed a movie to make that decision. I was already signed up, just waiting to go to boot camp.

Surrender is still your slightly less painful option.

I'm a straight guy, and I still rip it out of it for being so homo-erotic it practically bleeds the Village People in jets. Doesn't Maverick turn down hanging out with the flight instructor to oil up and play semi-naked volley ball with the guys? Actually, I'm surprise it took me so long to realise just how homo-erotic that film could be.

Still a good giggle at times, and F-14s will always, always have sex appeal.

The way those scenes turned out that way is a mystery for all time, especially as poor Tony Scott went to his grave with all the secrets last year......

The F-14 is one of the last great fighters the US has produced along with the F-15.

Now they just develop fighters that don't work and try and kill their pilots. Oh and did I mention they are way overpriced and over budget.

I may now know why I never really had the interest to go back and watch this movie a second time. I saw it in the theater as a kid. I remember enjoying it. I remember telling people I enjoyed watching it. That being said, I never remember a single urge to see it a second time, ever, which is abnormal as I have seen every movie that I have a remembrance of at least two times.

Tomcat's were the only plane that could carry phoenix missiles, which had an engagement range of more than 100 miles. If they ever got within visual range of the enemy, they were doing it wrong.

I would imagine you bounce off things long before getting within 100km range...

That was a pretty intense movie. And about the only place you can see footage of Shooting Stars (F-82s? F-80s? Can't remember atm).
