The US Congress has now decided that pizza is a vegetable. Because of the tomato paste. Which is made from a fruit....

What?... What?What?What?

*head explodes*

I got lost in thought... it was unfamiliar territory.

I'm amazed that congress is capable of changing the nature of a food item. Next you know, they'll be stopping global warming by means of a popular vote.

He's referring to SCHOOL LUNCH pizza fulfilling the requirement of one vegetable serving. The amount of sauce needed to achieve that with tomato is well established and their pizza does hit that mark.

It's just another buzz word that people get stupid about. If they said broccoli and rice were a veggie and grain you wouldn't care. If they said breadsticks and marinara or a sandwich with a slice of tomato and lettuce were grain plus veggie you wouldn't care. But put sauce on bread with some cheese and now it's PIZZA and you can't let schools call PIZZA A VEGETABLE.

It wouldn´t even make sense if tomatoes were vegetables... which they aren´t, they are fruits. The amount of tomato in tomato paste, even more so the amount of tomato in a pizza, is so miniscule that there exists no vegetable serving when serving a pizza... in no sense whatsoever.

But what am i saying, i guess it´s close enough.

This is where the 'arguement' , if you can even call it that, breaks down. You keep envisioning delicious american pizza, but you'd never dare post a picture of school lunch pizza because you know they are nothing alike, and if someone from dominoes confused the two and delivered you the stuff they're talking about you would not react well.

Are you suggesting that the pizza served in school cafeterias is more nutritional than Domino's pizza?

I wanted to answer, but then i realized that i seriously was getting into a debate why pizza is not a vegetable.Shocked

I guess i will just leave it at that and... well... going to facepalm extensively.

School lunch in general is ******, and most schools have vending machines kids eat out for lunch most days anyway.

All I'm saying is that this is not unreasonable in context. If broccoli with everything boiled out of it that the kids just throw away counts as a vegetable, pizza with way too much sauce and low fat cheese that they eat works just fine.

If you just want to be witty and change the scope, the argument would go on until we all agreed to make them eat fresh meat, fresh veggies, and whole grains while drinking a small glass of wine and a tall glass of water but that wouldn't be very American now would it?

To freak out over just this tidbit PIZZA A VEGETABLE when they were letting their kids eat school lunches to begin with is mind numbingly stupid. I mean were not even talking about something being added or taken away. Kids have been having school lunch pizza since I was in elementary school and it's still the same ****.

EDIT---
I ducked your question didn't I?

Yes. You caught me. I have assumed that school lunch pizza is more nutritional than the example in the pic he linked but I did
not check facts on that before posting the statement.

I don't think this changes the greater point though. Blowing up over this tear in the ocean is ridiculous. School lunches are ****** glop produced cheaply to keep lunch costs as low as possible because dumb ass parents expect the government to do everything for them for pennies then argue over which president caused the deficit.

Pack the kid's lunch.
GG you win.

Woo hoo! Things are getting better! The system works! (albeit slowly!)

For those too young to remember: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketchup_as_a_vegetable
The ketchup as a vegetable controversy refers to a proposed United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Drug Administration directive, early in the presidency of Ronald Reagan, that would have reclassified ketchup and pickle relish from condiments to vegetables, allowing public schools to cut out a serving of cooked or fresh vegetable from hot lunch program child-nutrition requirements.

Sounds like saying "the cheaper dubiously nutritional stuff is legally the same as the more expensive but healthy stuff you thought that the law requested".

Kind of making seat belts mandatory to car manufacturers and have the manufacturesrs issue seat belts one foot long & welded inside the trunk...

Nothing that can't be fixed with adding "raw and or unprocessed" to "vegetable", though.

As someone who never bought school lunch and always brought his own, where are the parents in all this? Why are the parents not demanding of their local school to serve vegetables. Why is this a federal issue when it should be a local issue. Are we as Americans truly at the point where we give up our children in Kindergarten and the federal government feeds them breakfast lunch and dinner? This issue should not even be in congress it should be between parents and their children, "eat your vegetables".

Awesome - Americans get served **** in school too.

I used to load my burger with vinegar because vinegar tasted bettter than school burger.

Not many stray dogs and cats in that area huh?

Ever notice they served spinach, kale and other greens just a day or two after mowing the football field?

The confusion about 'fruit' and 'vegetable' arises because of the differences in usage between scientists and cooks. Scientifically speaking, a tomato is definitely a fruit. True fruits are developed from the ovary in the base of the flower, and contain the seeds of the plant (though cultivated forms may be seedless). Blueberries, raspberries, and oranges are true fruits, and so are many kinds of nut. Some plants have a soft part which supports the seeds and is also called a 'fruit', though it is not developed from the ovary: the strawberry is an example.

As far as cooking is concerned, some things which are strictly fruits, such as tomatoes or bean pods, may be called 'vegetables' because they are used in savoury rather than sweet cooking. The term 'vegetable' is more generally used of other edible parts of plants, such as cabbage leaves, celery stalks, and potato tubers, which are not strictly the fruit of the plant from which they come. Occasionally the term 'fruit' may be used to refer to a part of a plant which is not a fruit, but which is used in sweet cooking: rhubarb, for example.

So, the answer to the question is that a tomato is technically the fruit of the tomato plant, but it's used as a vegetable in cooking.

They're amazingly off base by calling pizza a vegetable because of one ingredient that while used as a vegetable, is really a fruit.

Why don't they just save time and blend a collection of vegetables, fruits, and meats into a smoothie. It's more nutritious and likely tastes a a lot better than the crap they serve.

Note to everyone in this thread:

"Vegetable" is a culinary term.
"Fruit" is a botanical term.

They are *NOT* mutually exclusive. Examples:

Tomatoes are both a vegetable and a fruit
Squash is both a vegetable and a fruit
Peas are both a vegetable and a fruit
Eggplant is both a vegetable and a fruit
and there are probably dozens of other examples.

When you have a complicated food made out of several ingredients, it can be considered to cover multiple food groups. For example, lasagna counts as a serving of dairy (cheese) meat (sausage) grain (pasta) and even vegetables (tomatoes, and other vegetables added such as spinach or onions).

Of course, investigating if the tomato sauce on a slice of pizza really does constitute a serving of vegetables would probably be warranted. But the idea isn't so outrageous.
