why are smartbombs called "smartbombs?"

title says it all. seems like a pretty terrible and counter-intuitive name.

You're reading it wrong - the game client actually says 'S-M-R-T-bomb'.

They damage an area around the ship, but not the ship itself!
If they'd hurt the ship itself they'd be called Dumbbombs and would probably been designed by the Minmatar

Those are hipster bombs. They leave a bloom of organic gardens and fair-trade coffee shops in their area of effect.
