Because if people were warping in and moving around all randoms like it would probobly make me dizzy, ugh. Motion sickness inducing video games are the worst. The tracking camera is bad enough. Who keeps turning that back on?

You see, this is fluid space. Both space and in the inside of the ships are filled with fluid. The capsule on the other hand, only seems like its filled with fluid, but in fact is filled with air. All pods are located near the top of the ship because [reasons], so therefore, the airbubbles float to the top and make the ship always face the same way.

If you don't like that explanation, then the following reason should suffice:

Its ******* magic.

Our ships probably have a system that accounts for the gravitational pulls of every body in the current solarsystem and determines an arbitrary "up".

You are over-thinking something that shouldn't be overthought. This *is* rocket science, afterall.

Well we seem to be oriented around the plane of the ecliptic, defined by the way planets tend to orbit their star.

Would still leave two possible "ups" but if whoever manages the gates chooses that when you warp in, you get a standardizing influence.

Does seem a bit immersion breaking, as it doesn't seem logical that spacefarers would spend that much effort organizing a common up, but hey we are flying submarines anyway. Hardly the worst thing.

They are up for the same reason that the plants/moons dont orbit

It would just be too dam hard to do.. >_>

Lore-wise, warp drives are physics breaking. They cause a natural resistance to movement; they like to stay in place. Once turned on, they can never be turned off without the ship exploding.

The way they anchor themselves in space is what causes resistance, and keeps you from going infinitely fast.
It's apparently also what keeps you from falling into planets without orbiting at ludicrous speeds.

I like to assume that up is the same for all ships because they're all manufactured with their warp drives facing the same direction.
