A strange subject. When disconnected from the stars, should it be what awaits just outside your capsule or what you return to your home/base of operations to surround yourself with; what do you, the immortal, care to surround yourself with for ambience?

The crack of whips to the cries of slaves? Troops marching cadence? Tunes of harmony from within your sanctuary? Fine crops and natural breeze in a newborn colony? Golden hues of radiated light befitting Imperial glory with hymns of the divine echoing throughout station halls? Or even the gentle (hopefully steady) heart beat of your warp core?

And then, if desiring to dive further, I ask you why?

A curious survey, nothing more.

And to contribute I now offer my case:

I'm not usually good with people. Outside the capsule, I find my choice of ambience usually within my ship. Typically I walk the compartment my capsule is held in, which is separated from the crew. From corner to corner while browsing galnet pages via neocon or communicating through channels such as The Summit or Club Xotica I typically do not leave this section of the ship. For the capsule compartment is the beating heart of the vessel more often than not.

It is here you can feel the beast idle best. Gun belts cycle frequently felt through the walls as the copper aroma of nanites washing circuit boards as they diagnose hull integrity. In the far distance, perhaps the harsh shouting voices of bickering crew. Artificial gravity, when it works (as most of my vessels are Minmatar in design), ripples through the floor like gentle waves of a distant ocean, as you are standing nearly over the ship's center of gravity. If your guns have fired recently, the aroma of gunpowder and coolant hangs stale in the air; you practically feel like you're bathing within it.

It's a very alive sensation. An apex of wonder under the dim light.

It's easy to get carried away, to let your mouth run under the euphoric feeling of being at the top of the food chain. Perhaps this is partially to blame for my edginess.

Take me out of my ship and you'll find it's as if you've easily removed my tongue… or perhaps just a very large chunk of my ego.

Well, it depends. Most days, unfortunately, my out-of-pod time is spent handling meetings, reviewing reports, and other bureaucratic ephemera. Trying to get enough rack time can be challenging, to be honest.

If I have the time aboard the Yamabushi, I've recently converted the small officer's galley into a sanctuary, with several caged white songbirds. Tea, incense, birdsong, and the stars. It's remarkably peaceful.

Oh. And Maker help me, but I've authorized a baseliner physical trainer to take some executive control of my schedule, to compel me to make it to the gym. I honestly don't have enough time as it is, but old-fashioned, non-augmented exercise has been remarkably useful in managing stress.

After months on the ground, I find it hard to thrive in such stale environs as those we call our dwellings. My mother's mother used to hum a sort of prayer, truer for me now than ever.

"The winds,
the singing sands, they call me.

The heat,
the leaden, fragrant smoke of desert herbs, my cloak.

Cool stone on my back, and the evening breeze.
These, my cup and coffer under indifferent stars, on the way to caravansarai."

Stations can only provide so much of these precious comforts. While the sensation of the capsule is exhilarating, it does little for the soul.

I like to go to either my personal gardens or the gardens in the Basilica. I enjoy the feel of the flowers and plants and tending the beds and pruning. I like to feel the sun and wind on my face after all the time in capsule. I enjoy the sounds of the birds and insects. When I am done I often weave a crown of roses or other flowers in bloom and place it on a statue of Empress Jamyl I.

I consider myself to be the luckiest man in the universe, for I have no definitive answer to that. I travel so much that, from day to day, the ambiance is in constant motion. I may have a drunken hunt party with Brutor evangelists one night, then the next night spend the time discussing the better movements of DeVanieux's fifth symphony at a university hall across the cluster. I could be giving a lecture and then, five minutes later, see the stars from the surface while laying on top of rented ground transport with a woman I met that night. I've moshed at thrash metal shows, learned to fingerpaint landscapes with expatriates, played rugby with professionals in the offseason, and fenced with the Caldari champion (I lost three times).

Not many people are so blessed by God with these opportunities, and I've been extremely fortunate to experience so much. Life is worth living openly, excited about the possibilities of what you might see from day to day. The universe is full of such infinite variety, and humans are capable of acts of unspoken kindness so much more impressive than our fetishistic focus on cruelty. Perhaps one day, I will no longer have the will to do so and will find a common routine to settle into.

That day is not today.

That is what I do as well.

Sometimes I return home, to Intaki, just to fish and camp out in the wild, in nature, connected to the outside world only by a personal communications link and grav-vehicle.

When not out in the black my chambers usually has sounds from the homeworld, like music and such.

I find myself spending a good deal of time in the offices but I tend to find time to take leave at home after breaking through a pile of work.

At home I find myself often tending to my few hobbies. My most prominent one at this time is the growing of my own kresh trees for a personal supply of tea. Despite this however I always spend time tinkering with my various items that I've collected over time. My home is a calming environment, Lai Dai have provided for me well in this matter. I often find myself leaving the multi-use computer on the Lai Dai entertainment channels to provide a relaxing hum of noise.

In the office, I spend my time working with my employees on the business of the day. Often they work well without me needing to be there in person. When I go there to discuss projects and conduct overviews of the current operations they always react quickly. I often work closely on the finances of the business there, rather than on my ship or at home. We often drink tea together and meditate at important meetings to grant us greater focus when making the big decisions.

Currently I am spending more time at the office than in the pod, with a new company we must keep a tight grip on our finances, a slip in discipline and time allocated wrongly would mean the death of the company, although currently I am glad to report that this is far from the case.

I mostly just sit in my own quarters contemplating on the past weeks' events when I want to wind down. I sometimes fly to Intaki and stay there for a few days, but I feel truly at home when on board a space station. I listen to the quiet hum of the reactors powering the station quite often, especially while relaxing and drinking tea. Sometimes I play music or sing to it myself, mostly Intaki folkloric songs and Idama chants, I find them quite soothing.

Coffee. Cigarettes. Alcohol.

Beyond that...

I edit drone camera footage of engagements, put them to something classy like a Yamalle cello quartet or Kusainen operetta while playing with the angles and cuts. Then I upload the clips to those Fedside anti-capsuleer galnet community portals. I find the ambiance of their outrage amusing.

They just don't understand art.

I love music. I'm quite tolerant of all genres honestly. From the Raps of low-sec systems to the Hymns of Cathedrals I try to have music playing at all times. The type tends to vary depending on my mood and/or current activities.

I've been quite busy as of late, but during slower times I'd work on my show.

Usually I find myself reading or playing Galnet games.

I don't usually unplug while I'm in a ship, that space is for my crew. I try to keep my ships clean and functional, and have grown attached to having music playing while in flight. I'm quite pleased with the performance boost that it provides as well. For longer flights I'll have the ship stocked with high quality frozen meals.

I think your question asks more about what environment I prefer when unplugging, however. I live in a nearly-standard Capsuleer's Quarter attached to the LDRBC main facility, though I've had it modified to include a small washroom and kitchenette - why these aren't included as standard is beyond me. I'm also rather obsessive about cleanliness, and have gotten better lighting put in. It's uncluttered, simple, and clean, which is my preference after a long day of work.

I will admit to enjoying a hot bath after work, though; I'll usually do my book-keeping and galnet browsing then. Little indulgences are alright in moderation.

I find myself less and less interested in leaving the pod - there's really nothing that experience offers that can't be achieved (usually with more efficiency) from within the capsule. The only time I routinely disembark these days is when my current clone has become so emaciated as to require replacement or while switching between jump clones.

Even then the short interval I have to spend in some station-side cloning bay is uncomfortable in a fashion similar to what I believe someone who suddenly loses a vital sense - sight, hearing, etc - might experience.

I do try to spend quite some time out of the pod. Doesn't always happen of course but hey. When I do make it out of w-space and somewhere near home I like the visits the forests, a stream or just something tranquil like we used to have behind the Uni.

Contrary to popular belief I am not always blasted out of my mind, and I do enjoy sitting alone quiet and meditating.

Other times you can find me in the deep deep darkness of underground clubs amidst a writhing dancing mass of people high on life and other nefarious substances. It all depends on my mood.

I find myself surprised, I thought it was originally just me, but it seems there is a taboo amongst us all for having mortals amongst our choice of ambience. Should it be companionship or re-motivation for the times ahead. With all those who invest in us, none of us seem to want their company…

Do we perhaps loath mortals?

Are we a social class that is that truly elevated above man?

It's just… interesting.

Stricly speaking for myself here, but... Hell no!

I enjoy the company of baseliner, capsuleer and dustie alike.

I do think there is a sense of fear and reverence coming from the baseline community that a lot of capsuleers find difficult to deal with. Then again, that fades pretty fast if they see you enjoy exactly the same things you did as before you got all this hardware jacked into your artificial body.

I agree with Anatole, I just prefer being alone with my choice of ambience. I enjoy the company of a capsuleer, baseliner or a fellow merc equally, but more than that I enjoy quiet times by myself.

I don't loath baseliners, but moreso they loath me.

Not at all in my case, most of my staff is non capsuleers. And not many in my clan are pod pilots, yet i seek out their company.
Just to hear what they have been up to and talk non shop stuff over a nice cup of tea..
