When is a bounty effective?

So one of my toons had the good fortune of a High Sec Gank.
All's fair.

Question though.
I put a small bounty (50m Isk/40m ISK) on a couple of my new friends.
I would put a 500m ISK just for kicks, but am unsure what real impact it will have on the game play.

The Gank.
1) Tornado "one shots" my Mammoth... (surprise)...thought 10k EHP would hold...oh well. (no bounty on this guy)
2) Astarte Pilot waits by wreck (388m value) for a hauler to come around (put 50m on that guy)
3) Hauler comes to pickup wreck items (put 40m on him)

Can pirates and or others comment on how well the bounty system is working in a real game fashion.
Is it still just a scam or would adding a fun sized bounty make a difference?

Thanks.

The bounty payout is based on a percentage of the Total Loss, so the bounty received will always be considerably less than the actual Total Loss value. The base number we’re going for right now is 20%. This means that if you blow something up worth 100 million, then 20 million is paid out in bounty (or whatever is left in the bounty pool if less than 20 million).

You have to be flying a pretty blingy ship for it to be worth it, so generally no it is pointless to put a bounty on someone.

Although I guess pod hunters like Stoner Smurf and D400 get some nice payouts when popping bountied pods. But they are not going after the bounties themselves, they are just icing on the cake for them.

Dependent on the amount of bounty on a pilot I personally feel it has to be an encouragement to gank someone. If there is a reasonable bounty of xx millions of ISK is it not going to make the difference between a loss or a financial gain on the gank?

It does ssem to me that comments that bounties do not have an encouraging effect are attempting to prevent bounties being placed. Smile

You can sometimes gather a nice harvest of tears from bounties. When ever you find a white Knight for example. Many of them hate the impingement to their reputation. And the mechanic as it is even let's you know when to put more on them.

Let's say someone has a bounty of
1 billion ISK on their head.

What does that do really?

If they are trying to mission in an expensive ship; say an equal amount of value.

Would that not be a value to a ganker group to attempt a gank.

If not, what level of bounty truly makes a difference.

Thanks for your ideas.... as the bounty seems to be a fun concept if it actually did something worthwhile.

Dear: Kara Trix

We at Auto-Pod Xpress value a low tax implementation as a sign of a healthy corp, given that we prey on the weak we have noticed an un-healthy tax rate fo 90% imposed n your corporation members (if any) by consecuence, we are cordially war-decking your corp.

Of course a deposit of 200 million isk to our corporate wallet would detter us from the war, since you will have proven a finacial stability that your 90% tax does not reflect. You have 10 hours to deposit such proof of finacial stabiltiy before the wardeck is imposed on your fnacially strapped corporation.

Cordially yours

I know when I get to choose between ganking miner 1 with no bounty and ganking miner 2 with even the slightest bounty I'll go for ganker 2 every time.

If your target is stupid enough to autopilot paper thin bling ships through hi sec I''m sure eventually a ganker will notice too and go for it.

The problem with the latter being that although human stupidity is infinite, most ppl with high bounties won't autopilot their vessel or even fly paper thin bling ships.

I like how this discussion is limited to highsec.

If they are in a 1bil isk ship, someone will gank them anyway for the shiney. And thats the real problem. In hisec the bounty doesn't change the aggression mechanics, so unless you suspect trick them into engaging you or declare war (cost you 50mil+) your only option is to gank them. In a gank you loose your ship which cuts down significantly on any profit you are going to make. In lowsec, nullsec or whs, if you could kill the guy, you would anyway regardless of the bounty, because thats what you do in those areas.

Bounties are good for nothing but making carebears cry. I've seen a CEO sacrifice his entire corp and then quit the game because someone put a bounty on them. Bounties are one of the few game mechanics whose only purpose seems to be griefing of people who aren't terribly smart. Its a terrible game mechanic and should just be done away with.

That probably is because highsec is where bounty matters most.

If you encounter someone in low/nullsec you tend to just check: is it blue or hostile, and can i kill it or do I need to run. So no matter if you operate as NBSI or even NRDS, the amount of bounty is usually a very low priority outside highsec when deciding if you engage someone.

Even if you awox someone blue to you the decision usually is dependant on the person/ship in question and a bounty is only a nice Bonus.

As it stands right now a bounty rarely affects the chance of the target to get killed. The most notable effect will be when the target is doing an activity where random ganking happens anyway and his ship will be slightly more attractive. (wich mostly means highsec mining/hauling and to a lesser degree missioning/incursions)

Its pretty worthless as far as I can tell. I have a 400 mil bounty and it will take me a few months to get rid of it. Or me losing a carrier or something like that.

I actually tend to put bounties on the people I fly with the most, so I can make fun of them when I die (literally the only meaningful 'Notification' mail you can get); how much of the bounty was claimed is typically how hard I ridicule them.

Bounties are nice.

I've made 12.6m from player bounties. That's practically nothing but it's 12.6m I wouldn't have otherwise.

The top bounty hunter alliances list is also an interesting scorecard to watch. I would say all of the top 10 alliances there are top PvP alliances.

Bounties will affect HiSec miners more than anyone else, really. Reason being is if they're in a Mackinaw or a Hulk, the bounty usually comes to (correct me if I'm wrong) around 20 million ISK. This, combined with drops, is enough to pay for the 2 Catalysts (assuming T2 fit) needed to gank, and if the Catalyst can solo, they'll actually profit from the engagement.

A miner with a bounty is a very juicy target, and miners are already pretty juicy targets in HiSec.

You are 100% wrong.

If you want proof - put as big a bounty on me as you can and see if I care or if it makes a difference to the game for me.

The bounty system is broken and pointless at the moment.

While I can appreciate a good pod expressing as much as the next person, I think you overstate the service you can provide in your corp description.

One other feature that can be amusing is the notification mail. Someone being dumb in local and you can't shoot them as a blue? Just toss them a bounty for the lol factor. Still the other comments are right, 95% of the value of the bounty system is the kill notifications it generates, so you know immediately when your friends get popped.
