Quite likely not as many as you think, and certainly not all.
Given the massive amount of immigration a good while after having declared independence and the tendency for immigrants to "stick to their own kind" (and then there's also the "slave thing"), there's a good chance a big portion of the population of the USofA can't trace back any of its ancestors to somebody who was alive around those parts at that time.
Twisted

The percentage of people with primary English or Irish ancestry combined is dwarfed by either one of those with mainly German, Mexican or African ancestry. Lol

Total USofA population in ~1820: 10 million
Total number of immigrants from ~1820 to ~1920: over 30 million
Current USA population: ~ 314 million
Current YEARLY number of immigrants: ~1 million

So it's almost guaranteed that there are the very least 30+ million citizens of the USA that have absolutely no ancestry that participated in the Independence War, and probably more than half of the population (so, call it 160+ million) is in the same boat.

I seriously thought the OP's 2nd post was going to be "The Song of My People".

Also, today is not just about the Marines. But "Ooh Ra" anyway !

Interesting, cause it's National Independence Day in Poland.

95 years ago, after 123 years of partitions by Prussia, Austria and Russia, Poland regained its independance. Thank God and soldiers we don't have to speak German...or Russian.

At least the Veteran's Day Parade in San Francisco this year was highly Korean War-centric.

Those poor guys who served there have just been honestly twisting in the wind, forgotten almost utterly.

But really this is not what this day is all about...its just one small part of it.

Now here is a couple of videos that portrays my personal feelings when I see someone not giving this day the respect that its due...Also for the record I am not saying you or anyone else is, I just thought it would be nice to share with everyone.

About 4 mil. Same order of magnitude. Out of which children of more or less recent immigrants tend to be the more numerous on average per family.

Currently about 1/8 of the population are "1st generation Americans" (a.k.a. immigrants), and an additional 1/4 of the total is 2nd generation American (i.e. kids of immigrants). That's pretty much 1/3 of the population that it's basically guaranteed to have no direct line relation whatsoever to any American Revolutionaries, and we weren't even looking at 3rd gen (grandkids of immigrants).

My dad's ancestors arrived here around 1870 or so. Had something to do with a potato issue of some sort.

My mother's ancestors......well, we've all seen that barbarian rabble at the beginning of "Gladiator". Lol

We're not Watusi. We're not Spartans. We're Americans, with a capital 'A', huh? You know what that means? Do ya? That means that our forefathers were kicked out of every decent country in the world. I would poke more holes in this and try to explain to you what you are missing, but if you don't get it already I doubt you would understand anyway.
