Black screen before character selection

Last night I was playing when eve stopped working. I tried to log back on but every time I got past the launcher and right after the load bars appear before the character selection screen comes up it would go to a black screen and eve would be listed as not responding in task manager. I have checked the forums but was unable to see any post with a problem like this.

------things I have tried-------

Deleting overwolf
clearing cache
restarting computer
using repair tool
updated graphics driver
deleted all eve files and reinstalled

I have put a ticket in but was curious if anyone has had this problem and may know a solution. Thank you!

Right now i'm facing very same problem. Also can't find any solution.
p.s. Curiously enough - Singularity client works just fine.

Sorry to hear that but at least I'm not the only one having this problem. I haven't had any problems until last night before that eve ran perfect.

In some cases people have ended up with the in-testing builds of the EVE Launcher (only published to Singularity) on their Tranquility installs. The builds on Sisi attempt to start the game using DirectX 11 which can cause a black screen on the TQ EVE Client. You can tell if this is the case by checking the settings in the EVE Launcher; if it has a tab marked DirectX, you should change it to use DirectX 9.

Thank you Atropos but that doesn't seem to be the case here. However I just right clicked the EVE icon and went to properties from there I went to compatibility and ran the compatibility troubleshooting tool and had windows fin the way to run it and it worked. I'm back in now Lol

I just tried to launch the game and was greeted by an 840 MB patch. After the patch finished installing, I also got this black screen error. I ran the repair tool to no success. Then, on a hunch, I looked at the DirectX settings in the launcher. Surprise, surprise! It was set to DX11. I changed it to DX9, and the client launches just fine. My conclusion can only be that the DX11 support was introduced with this patch, with the DirectX setting now defaulting to DX11 instead of DX9. I know for fact that my GPU does not support DX11, so the error I got makes sense.

My problem with this whole situation? ONCE AGAIN, CCP RELEASED A PATCH WITHOUT GIVING US ANY EFFING PATCH NOTES.

The latest patch notes (available here) are for the Odyssey 1.2 release, dated 10/22. That's 10 days ago now, by my current date/time. No notes for today's patch whatsoever, presumably dated 11/1. Now, I'm certainly OK with unannounced patches that are small and have no impact at all on normal Eve gameplay (read: backend updates for future Dust 514 integration or other such patches that shouldn't have any impact on client performance). But seriously, a patch that is 840 MB in size, that apparently updates the DirectX version AND default DX version setting, that could possibly affect thousands of players who are not running DX11-compatible hardware? Come the EFF on CPP! I'm seriously annoyed at the lack of communication on this one.

I'd like to direct your attention to this thread regarding the upcoming changes to DirectX requirements/support. According to that dev blog:

If you've played EVE Online using Singularity, our public testing server, you may be running with DirectX 11. The change should be mostly unnoticeable, as our goal right now is to have a DX11 client that performs the same (performance, stability) as our DX9 client. This change will go out to everyone in our winter expansion, EVE Online: Rubicon.

So the DX11 component is already live on SiSI, but was NOT supposed to go live on TQ until the Rubicon release. Fine, great. I was on SiSi last night and had no issues. I'm not sure if my client was defaulted to DX9 or DX11 (presumably DX9), but I had no issues at all. Whatever the case, this latest TQ patch defaults to DX11, and we were not told of the change. This is a HUGE oversight on CCP's part IMO, and I think that this trend of releasing patches without giving us patch notes needs to stop. If you're going to put out a change that involves possible compatibility issues with my hardware, well goddammit I think I need to know about that. If I had gone the route that so many people have (and will), I could possibly have gone as far as uninstalling and reinstalling my graphics drivers, the Eve client, and possibly gone through who knows how many Windows graphics and compatibility settings, all of which could have taken me hours to do. All for lack of being told that all I need to do is change one little drop-down box in the Eve launcher.

CCP, this is hugely irresponsible on your part. I'd like some sort of response that will reinstate my faith in your ability to keep us, the players, informed of changes that could possibly impact our ability to play the game. Thank you.

The EVE Launcher you're using was deployed against the test server, however you're now using that updated build against the live server, which doesn't support the changes made. The instructions for accessing Singularity on the EVElopedia specifically mention creating a second copy of your EVE installation since changes on the test server are generally incompatible with the live server.

By the very fact you've got that tab on your Tranquility EVE Launcher you've connected your installation for Tranquility to Singularity and subsequently updated the EVE Launcher to the test builds that are published to Singularity.

We can't stop people using test builds against the live server, but it's not something we support, and it's something that's strongly advised against for precisely these reasons.

As per the DirectX 11 blog, the changes, which are only available on the test server, apply only to the Windows EVE Ciient. As such Mac users do not have the DirectX settings tab nor does the EVE Launcher set any flags relating to it, on Mac.

I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions for your friend, but I would urge her to file a bugreport with as much information as she can provide.

I had the black screen issue from the character selection screen to the gameplay screen. my launcher was on DirectX 11 but it would not save. What I did was select DirectX 9 and save. switched to repair tab and then ran the repair. Voila, it worked. Never heard from the Devs, but you can thank me later.

I fixed a bug last week, that would stop the settings menu from saving, which would probably be why you couldn't save.

Tried to login today and got this issue as well. I don't see any options to switch DirectX versions in my settings though, and I've never used the in-testing stuff. Last time I played was maybe two weeks ago, everything was working fine.

My TQ and Sisi installs are completely separate, they're even on different hard drives. Yes, I copied my main install to a second location just as the test server instructions specify. I still got the DX11 settings on my main install.

I am having this issue as well. However minus the not responding in task manager. I can hit escape and the menu does come up oddly enough, however, I cannot select any of my characters.

It was set to DX 11. But this is now after Rubicon, so it should be available right?. Set to DX 9 and get same issue.
Ran Repair Tool (1st time it failed, 2nd time completed) still getting black screen
I have also tried clicking where my character is[should be] (maybe it was a bug with the loading of the screen...nothing changed...stayed black)
Edit: Re-installation of Eve did nothing

I'm having the same problem where I just get a black screen upon logging in but can still access the esc menu fine.

I've tried repair, re-installed, dx9 and dx11, fiddled with the graphics settings, but to no avail.

I would recommend trying to clear the EVE Client's cache; you appear to be having problems loading one of the bulkdata files.

I had same problem when using dx11, that first time I started game after restarting computer (might be random) it seemed to be black screen on loading and nothing else happened, and then I close game and start again and it would work fine. though loading assets slower than normal. I switched back to dx9 though, because my Mumble overlay doesn't work with dx11 for some reason?
