Another not named yet - even if it isn' t nearly my worst (and a npc purchase - but fits the "buy things" blunder)

- bought a 105 million isk med clone
-- it was on top and easy to click . Didn't think clearly in the EMO - "better-do this before I log out butt-hurt" mode

You should check out the adaptive invulnerability field II that was bought for 1.2b not long ago i think 1-2months since that time, that trader was lucky.Shocked

To avoid the "selling at really low, or really high" problems, make sure you never press "Enter" too fast, or accept the order change too fast so you bypass the warning, that's probably the best safeguard (second to actually checking the numbers to make sure you entered it correctly).

going semi inactive so decided to put my isk into a venture to attempt to come back after a year or 2 more hardcore and being able to cash in on the increased price due to ingame inflation.
Needless to say CCP seeded a few extra of these items that was not advertised reducing my stock value to below what I paid :-( *cough* ISW *Cough*

luckily I am quite good at trading and got them alot cheaper than they were on the open market and Only lost about 10bil over all the stock, hoping the price stabilises/rises in a year or 2 to at least what I paid for them. Should have re sold them right away and made a good profit before it was all known.

These stories remind me of that message that pops up.

"You are selling this item at 87% below regional average. Are you sure?"

That message is like a smoke detector. Infuriating most of the time as it has so many false alarms (mine loves cheering every time I cook a steak), but a total lifesaver when you really need it.

This. I have read enough of these threads now that I live by that little warning.

One mistake that happened me some times is to forget switching the trade window to-from advanced and so instead of dumping to buy orders I auto-created a sell order right above those.

The minus is the loss of broker fees.

The plus is the amazingly irated emails I got by other traders for undercutting them so hard Lol

You can game this if you want to buy something.

Say it's a 20-27m spread but you would buy at 23m. Post two of the item at 23m and have an alt undercut you at 22.999m. Then have both characters complain in local. 'Bloody deep under cutters".Link the item.

Almost without fail, rivals will counter undercut you. If one has a large stock buy it all, then cancel your orders.

I did that a lot when I traded ammo, a market I hardly touch now.

I've been lucky, I bought an Orca for 43 million ISK, which is waiting for me to train my skills. Bought 200,000 Caldari Navy Scourge Heavy Missiles for 10% of their regional value, which I use on missions. Oh, and I sold a PLEX for 100 million ISK because I'm a moron that never changed his default sell settings off of immediate when I first started. 400 million ISK isn't much now, but when I was 3 weeks in to the game it felt like the end of the world. And I bought a Rattlesnake for 500 million from an alliance mate... Gotta love being scammed by allies.

After a prolonged stay in W-Space, I went to Jita to load up on skills that had become unlocked. As I hastily went through each skill group in the market, I somehow ran out of money, which seemed impossible because the toon I was on had over 3b isk when I began. A quick look at the transactions showed me that I had bought a skill for almost exactly what was left in my wallet: 3b isk. Even worse was that I injected the skill as soon as I bought it.

Fortunately for me a petition resulted in the skill becoming un-injected and the skill was returned to my cargohold, which I ended up selling at a profit within a month. The skill was astronautic engineering.

Would be nice if CCP gave us personal sub-wallets that we could set aside our savings, and that couldn't be used for purchasing.

Contributing in this wonderful thread.

Bought a slow moving item for inter-regional trading. Due to the slow turnover of the item the in-built percentual warnings had gone haywire in the exact opposite way. To make it short, I made a whopping -99,8% percent profit on it.

Luckily, a few times I have been on the good-end of such deals. Mistakes were made (TM).

I just recently went a little heavy on something in jita with a rare 30% margin, power was out at my house for a day and when I logged in the margin was gone and items selling 500k less than what I paid for them, loss of about 100m. Not TOO bad but I was standing to make 300m off it if it worked out.

Now they're up until the next time the market swings up again in a month or so from now lol

These are great I dunno why but I love reading about mistakes and lucky profits!

Keep em coming!

I went inactive with 1000+ of each of the T3 datacores about 2 months after Apoc launched.

I don't remember too precisely, but I think they worth 5-15 mil apiece at the time...

Not quite a market blunder but I once repaid a loan to the wrong character and lost a couple of bil. Actually, thinking about it, I have done that twice. Both times the lender had a name with a double or triple consonant somewhere it shouldn't have been. Sent isk to Strogg instead of Strrogg, for instance.

Market blunders ... about half of my manipulation attempts Big smile

Yeah, if we're talking about straight up bad calls, my worst was 20-25b on a bad speculation bet.

Just ate a 3b loss today.

My worst blunder was putting in a buy order at selling price. Didn't lose much on that one but scared me pretty bad.

I would say the worst blunder I've seen is someone buying a couple Ballistic Control Units for 1.4b isk. The guy even emailed me and tried to get it back. Felt bad for the guy but Jita local told me to drink his tears so there was really nothing I could do.

worst? probably losing 200 - 300 mill when battleship prices started spiking a year or two ago, I was flipping them over a period of 2 weeks or so and didn't stop until the prices stopped rising. So I ended up on the plus side but had to dump a bill or more worth of Maels at a loss.

Apart from that a few speculations that didn't work out and lost me a few 100 mill here and there but that's just the cost of taking a risk.

Oh and I was flipping CN Scourge heavies and cruise in Jita a while back, the icons look very very similar, so yes I sold the cruise at the heavy price and wiped out all the profit I made on that item over the hour or two that I was flipping it :)

I keep the warnings on and always tab out of the price field - that has saved me so many times.

I created a market order Zydrine. Think the price was around 1200,00. I forgot the decimal and made the order to be 120000. It was 5 mil units or something around that.

someone killed the Damage Control II marked about a year or so ago. like really killed it.
so I bought a huge stockpile, knowing that if only I'd leave it alone long enough, I'd double my isk easily.
dude who killed the marked then convoed me, telling me he needed my stock to correct the damage he did.
I sold him my stock at that current price.

still hate myself for it.

oh and decimals. **** decimals.
