What if I want to roleplay a roleplayer roleplaying? How would that work?

We must go deeper into the role play.

ofc it has... have you ever heard the tale of the rise and fall of BoB? the rise of the GoonSwarm? what about the story of how TEST thought they were the cool kids, only to be used and later on disposed of? a well written tragedy if you ask me.

stuff like that is pure genius.

damn good lore, compared to pandas, wizards, and all that crap.

also, on the topic. on eve you cant help but roleplay, if you are an *******, guess what, you are roleplaying an *******.

miner gankers, roleplayers. miners, roleplayers. wh weirdos, roleplayers. nullsec people, roleplayers. honestly, compared to every other MMORPG out there, eve is the only one with such a high level of roleplayers.

I think we all roleplay on some different level or another. For example, while I don't actively roleplay, whenever someone says they are a gallente pilot I either cringe or just laugh at them, because I was born a caldari pilot. While I don't go out and plant the Caldari flag in every system I explore I do hold a bias towards their enemies.

Its complicated . . . I mean . . . just . . . Eve What?

I've seen a few threads about roleplaying, but what I'm really wondering is, above and beyond many other MMOs, why is it so prevalent within EvE?

Is it down to the sandbox nature of the game, or is it due to something else? I'd like to hear from some of those who enjoy the roleplaying aspects of the game as to whether it's something they do in other games, or whether it's something they feel they can do more of here. I'd preferably like to hear from people OOC as it's a subject that quite interests me.

The only proper roleplay I've done is table top AD&D, I've never really carried it across into a game. I'm actually very impressed with some of the roleplay aspects I've seen (tipping my hat to some of the CODE people) as it does take at least a modicum of intelligence to carry it off properly (it's always especially interesting when you see a roleplayer come up against a non-roleplayer as it's usually the non-roleplayer who ends up shouting and screaming when faced with someone who is very much straight laced!).

So, do you do it? If so is it something you do across other MMOs or just EvE? Is it something you enjoy about the game, or is it something that really frustrates you? (e.g. when faced with a roleplayer and you just want a straight answer, does it annoy you if you can't get one?).

I'm interested from a personal point of view just because it's not something I've encountered so widely in other MMOs.

This funny dudeboy called Erving Goffman said that we all spend our lives playing different roles in a big drama.

I suppose it's only natural some people want to continue that in a video game.

For me RP in EVE is really because the lore of the settings is so interesting and I want to feel more engaged and merged with it.

I have played other games on RP servers and attempted to RP but it's not felt the same as within EVE and I think part of it has to do with as mentioned the fact the game is a sandbox. Whilst player organisations can't rewrite the entire story of the game our actions are forever noted and taken into some level of consideration.
I would hope that one day we can see more levels of immersion and effect upon the NPC world of EVE where we as Capsuleers can help move the story or setting around us, I had hoped the return of live events would help with this somewhat however so far they have been mostly predetermined and CCP is rather standoffish towards naming and and reconsigning specific players or groups actions within them (which is understandable considering the levels of drama recently).

I see the Goons, TEST, and the demise of BoB as player made Eve Online history.

I am no more role-playing when flying my Dominix than driving my car in real life, when I do not think (imagine) I am Fangio, for example.

RP is great for those who wish to do so, but it is not for everyone.

I dislike live events, they're a try to enforce a specific storyline over players, often across a predeterminated trail and outcome. In a way that works for table-top RPG or for LARP but hardly can work properly in massive multiplayer envinroment.

They did a far better job with the events related to Empyrean Age and FW launch. That was more a global stage setting for some major gameplay improvement.

Sure, absolutely. The thing is, you won't always be able to tell. One of my alts is an Amarr industrialist. Talk to him about what he does "in the game" and he'll tell you he builds ships and supplies in lowsec Domain. He'll talk about the market for certain kinds of minerals, he'll chuckle about some amusing sales of late (huge order from a Goon for something he deliberately crassly overpriced), be irritated about losing a ship to a gate camp a while back (but admit it was his own fault)—all of it totally in character, but none of it bizarre in the way that some role players go out of their way, it seems to me, to appear outlandish. As for Morihei here, he's disturbingly nationalist—in a way I would have an issue with IRL—and a bit moralistic, but he's not constantly spouting oddities in order to seem "authentic".

I like RPing. I think it's fun. I just wish I had the patience to wade through more of the fiction in order to get familiar with more of the lore.

"Enduring", "restrained" and "ample" as designations for starship components are foreign to the genre of high-tech science fiction and don’t belong in Eve Online. (And as for “scoped” …)

I had a girlfriend that thought a little roleplay in our sex life would be kinky once.

Unfortunatly she wanted to roleplay a ultra conservative couple that had sworn abstinence. Sad

BoBwins Law: As a discussion/war between two large nullsec entities grows longer, the probability of one comparing the other to BoB aproaches near certainty.

I'm a semi role player. As a character, I rant about those damn Gallente, I hate Erotica 1 and her new order. I despise the goons(grrr goons). In real life, they're fine. I have no real hatred for any of these examples. The New Order and goons found a way to make the game exciting for them, great. They're playing within the rules as far as I know, so I hope they continue having fun. Heck, a new order guy popped my retriever, in character I was piissed, as a player I give him kudos.

I just turned into an egg, did I level up? I spent an hour trying to salvage a wreck, when in local a guy said "Stop it, this is my Tempest, I was AFK"

On my case, I always enjoy a bit of roleplaying, no matter the game. On games such as EVE, with such amazing lore, I tendo to project my own personality on my character, resulting in greater inmersion. For example, when I get a can full of illegal stuff when missioning, I blow it off as if it were in disgust (although it's a practical reason: having that can floating around with the others would end up on me not paying attention and opening it again and again lol).

I would agree that it's all about how deep the lore is, as well as how relatable it feels.

There's no weird aliens or species with odd customs that are odd for the sake of being odd. Every one of the factions has a very human feel to it and speak to different parts of us all, even most of the pirate factions do.

Try reading all the chronicles and the 3 books and tell me how hard it is to resist the urge to RP just a little bit xD

I roleplay an average dude from the early 21st century playing a computer game.

Looking to talk on VOIP with other EVE players? Are you new and need help with EVE (welfare) or looking for advice? Looking for adversarial debate with angry people?

To be honest the only really visible RPers in eve are those miner bumping guys in CODE. Other than that there are just a handful of FW entities that RP.
