In the tactical overlay, the lines that extends from objects in space and interscept with the flat "plane" should interscept at the range that the object is from the ship.

The idea is that the overlay would be useful if one could simply glance at the plane and get an idea of what objects are from his/her ship. IE make if more useful.

I think what he means is exactly what i thought some time ago. Right now we have these circles with range indicators and a STRAIGHT line up or down to the target, what leads to false range indication when cutting the circles. The soution for this would be a CURVE instead of a straight line to connect the circles with the target.

For a target that is 20 km away it looks like this from the side:

Now:

............................Target
.................................x
.................................x
.................................x
.................................x
.................................x
.................................x
OxxxxxxxxxxxxXxxxxxxxxxxxxxXxxxxxxxxxxx Overlay Circles
....................10 km.............20 km

Better:

.............................Target
...................................x
.......................................x
..........................................x
............................................x
..............................................x
...............................................x
OxxxxxxxxxxxxXxxxxxxxxxxxxxXxxxxxxxxxxx Overlay Circles
....................10 km.............20 km

Ok it seems nobody cares about the tactical overlay. I think improving the usability of something by replacing a line with a curve is a really low hanging fruit and definitely worth the effort.

Basic functionality, simple solution.

I could argue the other way around. Currently you see the distance on the X/Y plane plus 'some' Z component depicted by the vertical line. The actual distance is shown and updated in the overview.

Next, module ranges are depicted by those bubbles when hovering the mouse over the module icon. There one can easily see whether the intended target is inside or outside.

Thus, the current layout offers even more data than the proposal.

And what exactly is the use of this even more data? The distance and other information from the overview should be directly connected to the position of a target, what actually is the sense of the tactical overlay.
