So I play and do l4's with a small group (4) of friends on a weekly basis, we were trying to ramp up to do l5's and I was wondering if a Damnation is a good ship to tank them. It seems like shield buffer tanks are obviously the ideal with the neut towers, but can an armor tank pull it off as well? If so does anyone have a good build idea? Also I alreadyhave the skills for this ship so that's why I'm asking.

2x1600mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten Plates I
2xMission passive hardeners
2xMission active hardeners

10MN Afterburner II
Command Processor
2xCap Recharger

Armored Warfare Link - Damage Control
Armored Warfare Link - Passive Defense
Armored Warfare Link - Rapid Repair
Siege Warfare Link - Shield Harmonizing
2xSalvager
Small Tractor Beam

2xMedium Trimark Armor Pump I or t2 if ya wanna risk it

Could do whit a guardian or 2, stupid tank whit the right hardeners tho.. Better to send in a cov op to take range and then get aggro at 170-180km as your friends whit cynabals warps in poping neut and stasis towers first. it will be amazingly fast youl see :)

FYI I believe all lvl5s are in low-sec. Please correct me if I am wrong, I am not a mission man. However if you plan to do lvl5s regularly...and they are all in low-sec as i believe...you better control the system or prepare to dock often. As when the low-sec locals smell someone doing a level 5...a blood frenzy ensues...and combat scanner probes start pooping out all over the place...

As you stated shield fits are better anyway if you have the skills. Passive recharge for the win. 1 Guy tanks in a T3 or a Nighthawk or whatnot and the other 3 pew pew.

So you Need the logi support with armor tanks, and not with a t3 cruiser? This makes sense but I thought the neut towers regened if you killed them....

Not sure what you're asking here.

You need logistics on an armor tank because armor requires cap -- either local or remote -- to repair. Shields get around this by naturally recharging.

T3s are generally **** when fit for passive shield tanks, so it's not like they're any better off in this regard.

Neut towers regen on a few missions, but far from all of them -- and even when they do, it's only a finite number of times. So you could kill the neuts first and then bring in whatever ships you wanted.

Does that answer your questions?

Yes it does, Since there's only the 4 of us its the difference in having one of us have to roll a logi vs dedicated dps. We have a Tengu pilot so it sounds like having him tank is our best option, just trying to verify we don't need logistics support for him. Thanks for the tip on the towers as well.

Honestly I haven't run the numbers on a passive Tengu, but it doesn't sound like the best idea in the world. Much of the Tengu's tank comes from speed -- and speed relies on cap. It has a paper-thin buffer unless you bump it up with extenders and the like -- but then you also bloat the sig.

I suspect you'd be better off with a Drake for dedicated tank if you wanted to go that way. A Gila could also do it quite well (as could a Rattlesnake). But a Tengu? Maybe someone with more experience (or immediate access to EFT) could confirm, but I'm thinking it's a pretty risky proposition.
