How can it possibly have been detected "in the constellation" yet they can't work out which system it occured in? That doesn't make any sense.

The only remaining option, Mr. Ixiris, is that this explosion may have happened in deep space, far removed from the stellar systems. Given that our navigation systems operate on a waypoint-to-waypoint basis, we have no ability to search the vast darkness between the stars. If, for instance, there were an unusual wormhole, a hot lab, or some other object out there, we'd have no way to know.

In that case, we'd easily know which system it's close to, since the data would have reached one system far, far sooner than the others.

Like, years sooner. That's how space works.

Unless it took place several years ago, in a place roughly equidistant from several systems in the constellation, in which case we're long past the point of being able to do anything about it - and even if this did happen, the time delay on sensor readings from each system should give us a relatively easy triangulation.

Unless the detonation was detected by means that, y'know, operate faster-than-light. Because that's a thing, Mr. Ixiris.

Anyway-- we can assume that, however the detonation was detected, it was either by a method that doesn't allow for easy triangulation, or that those who detected it have no desire to share the information.

Pilot Ixiris is correct in stating that the authorities would have been able to figure out which system the explosion took place in if it did occur within the constellation OR at least would have been able to work out a "cone" from which the explosion could have possibly taken place, provided it happened in deep space. Given that the news report pretty clearly indicated that the method of detection was by way of regular electromagnetic radiation rather than more exotic FTL methods, it is likely that the information is being purposefully covered up.

If it did happen in the YFN-UN constellation then we should already know what system it happened in. If it happened in deep space then the official report of it taking place anywhere in the YFN-UN constellation is either purposefully misleading or sloppiness. Either scenario points towards some human error or intervention, which is in a way more interesting than the explosion itself.
