Ender's Game is a story of a child fleet commander who leads a massive cap ship fleet to preemptively strike an enemy who may one day threaten earth.

The story is of an exceptional young boy recruited by space naval academy and trained to lead a massive cap ship fleet in what is supposed to be a final and crushing war to annihilate an enemy species which in the past attacked Earth.

The boy Ender who begins his training when he is 8 years old is selected because of exceptional intelligence and his unique perspective at an early age to forgo winning individual battles when the option to win the entire war exists.

The book explains more clearly how Ender's relationship with his classmate, his brother and his fellow candidates at naval school lead him to his perspectives.

I read the book and found it interesting because of the discussion of fleet tactics. The book describes some of the tactics and is like Art of War - lite for space warfare.

These tactics were perhaps better illustrated in the movie where Ender leads a fleet to attack an enemy Ice mining ship, harvesting ice for water, and later to attack their home world.

Enders fleet consists of Dreadnaughts, Carriers with massive drone capability and flagship Capital Ship with a doomsday style weapon (effectively a Titan although it is not referred to as a Titan).

During Ender's campaign he uses tactics such as holding back a reserve force to join the battle at a strategic moment, flanking the enemy fleet, and sacrificing cap ships to protect the Titan.

Both the movie and book are really good. The visual effects in the movie really are amazing. The story in the book is original, not some recycled story from another era applied to space.

The book is old, came out long before EVE.

The movie falls short of the book in that it doesn't adequately develop Ender's growth as a fleet commander. Particularly it leaves out Ender's antagonistic relationship with Bernard (also his brother, his elementary classmates).

The book also tells the story of how Ender's brother and Sister also rose to political power at a very young age as Ender was climbing the military ranks.

The movie does a great job of showing Ender's dreams and dreamlike gaming experience which the author labored to describe in words.

I turned a few guys on to EVE online this past summer by first introducing them to the book Ender's Game. They enjoyed the fleet command aspect of the book so the transition to EVE was natural. Love the buddy program.

If you are not familiar with Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, I highly recommend checking it out.

Anyone else see it?

** There are a few spoilers but the biggest being that in the end, Ender is told he has been advanced for further training, and is conducteing simulated battles against the enemy, which will later be revealed that these were actual battles that Ender was commanding remotely. Thus why the say Ender's Game, its not a game.

Nice write up.

I'm sure there will be more people to post about it since the movie was just released recently.
