I was reading about target painters and see they give a sig radius bonus. Is this bonus to my ships signature? or does it mean the target ship becomes a bigger signature and easier to hit?

The target painter inflates your target's signature by a certain percentage, thus allowing you to hit them easier, and your missiles will apply more damage.

Edit: a larger sig also means they can be locked faster.

Target painters are used on enemy ships, and increase the target ship signature by a %. Increasing the target ships signature means, other ships can lock them more quickly, they will take more damage from missiles, and will be easier to track and hit when using turrets.

Thanks for the replies. Is the painter just for weapon accuracy? Would it help with other modules like warp scramblers and webs to hit a speedier target?

Nope. Doesn't impact the performance of those modules.

Target Painters also increases how good guns hit, not just their tracking. Bigger target = better applied and higher damage. Of course it won't exceed the potential damage of guns or missiles, but at least guns have the ability to get wrecking hits (critical hits basically).

Thanks for this help. Im still a couple days old to Eve and undecided which gunnery route to train. I want to do pvp, but not sure if overheated hybrids turrets would give better tracking and dps over auto cannons.

I asked the painter question for long term plans, not on beginner to pvp fit. :) Just trying to learn as much as I can about modules and tactics right now.

Best turrets in the game right now are hands down Pulse lasers (Of all sizes, small, med, large). Second best would probably by Large Auto cannons.

Didn't mean to get off topic with weapons talk. Thanks for everyones help.
BTW, I decided to train for the Catalyst with the small hybrid turret. Might be a good starter pvp ship for me. I can learn flying that and the Atron and see how I do. If i end up being somewhat decent, then train for a Thorax at some point.
